started up the gen set this last weekend to nuke some pop corn, only to discover when i stepped out back to check the water flow, that no water was in fact flowing.
i had a lot of smoke (didn't smell like oil or anything), but no water being ejected as usual.
so, what's the guess? impeller? could it be something else? more simple/more of a pain?
would like to get it fixed before the heat of summer sets in so i can run the air while out and about if i so choose...
The smoke was probably the inside of the exhaust hose burning from the heat of uncooled exhaust. Possibilities are sea valve closed , impellor shot or possibly that there is a blockage in the suction line.
Was the boat out of the water for the winter? If the generator was winterized, were the drain valves closed after draining?

good to know about the smoke...luckily, i went outside as soon as it started running and found that something wasn't right, so it shouldn't have gotten tooooo hot.
the boat is kept in the water year-round (tennessee here...no need to wrap, etc.). the sea cocks haven't been moved (unless a mouse did it). so, that leaves the impeller or suction thingie as you said...unless some other possibilities are out there. and the boat, including genset, wasn't winterized. just used the bilge heat (i use the boat year round).
i'll run this by my mechanic sometime in the next couple of days. he just finished changing all my instrumentation...i don't want to give him a stroke.
Do you have many weed growing in your boat slip? If so some may have been sucked into the water intake and plugged it. Also do you have a suction strainer on this hose? It too could be full.
Hope this helps,
Paul

hey dude cant stop reading the forum even from the keys. a little side topic but i dont know if you have but it would be wise to make sure that ALL your seacocks will open and close. mine were the originals when i purchased and the previous owner never moved them so none were operational and this was the first thing that i changed when i got the boat. they were 30 years plus and you may want to check yours if you havent tried moving them.
