a/c under the seat

Post by 9rock »

I am thinking of taking out the drawer and putting in a window unit
My mech engineer says I can put a small vent in the side of the box put a vent in the hull for exhaust and should have no problams I already have built a chase wall all I have to do is extend the wall up where the unit is close off the end and it will act as a duct

Reasons why I wouldn't do it

Post by ready123 »

1) Noisy.
2) poorer cooling than heat pump.
3) Higher draw on the genny.
4) Lower feed pressure to circulate air around whole vessel.
5) and lastly condensation of the exhaust air from window unit in the boat.

If you must have a window unit put it in a window, that is why it is called window rather than central unit :!:

Insulate box and top ridged insulation

Yes not as good as a heat pump but a fraction of the cost

No genny 3000 watt inverted for limited use , shore power the most
unit draws 6-9 amps

small fan if needed in cabin and small computer low amp computer fans in bulk head between cabin and helm to pull air in there closing that off

self evaporating unit and exhaust is contained from the rest of the boat via boxed and insulated chase

In order for it to work you will need a large exhust vent ( about the size of the unit ) or a forced air vent using a high volume blower the a/c units put out a lot of hot air and it has to go somewhere. By the time you get it to work right you would better off and dollars ahead to put in a marine a/c . ,but if you Use a window unit becuse thats whats in your budget ,use like it should be , the right way to use one is in a window or if you can Thur the wall to exhaust out to the helm area. your engineer may not understand the way HVAC systems work .

He is our hvac sub with a mech engineer degree and has done millions of dollars of work for us so i take him at his word

I was going to put in a portable self contained and duct it straight out
when talking to him I asked him about putting in the unit in the way i described he sees no real problams .if the unit runs a little warm i can steal a little cold air from the cabin to help dial it in

I just dont spend that much time on mine my friend slipped next to me has a f32 that we will spend most the time on so my unit will not get that much use

There was a post on the forum of a member who did a great job mounting it in the cabin door.

Unless you duct it so the blower forces the hot air out or add a blower to do so , the A/C will stop cooling in a few minutes as the heat builds up around the unit . The condser area ( rear of unit)needs air flow to trasnsfer heat . A A/C cools the air by removing heat and the heat has to go somewhere . If you have good are flow to it it will work , if not it will not.

I am no expert, but I believe if there is insufficient air flow to cool the compressor and coils the unit will burn out.

well if it was a f32 and not a 30 and i had a few thousand instead of a few hundred i would consider that :D , i have little doubt this system will suit my needs , the fresh air and exhaust numbers have been caculated and acording to those I can acomplish what I need with this method

I think the concerns / considerations that people are raising here are all valid - but I get the feeling you are not really looking for assistance, just trying to find someone to agree with you and your hvac sub.... You can believe whoever you want to I guess.

BUT, instead of losing storage space and cutting holes in the hull and gambling on whether this will actually work or not - especially for something you say you probably won't use that much - why not consider something more along these lines as a probably more suitable low cost solution ...

No not looking for assistance or for someone to agree just posting a project no more no less
I going to pic up storage by raping around the dinett seating and some on deck in seating thats more user friendly
if the unit becomes a problam i will either move it back in the cabin bulk head or find a alternitive like you posted but a colman rv roof top
or a compact room stand up .
I dont have to have it but it would be nice
:D

Another Idea would be a portable type A/C unit that uses a hose to vent the hot air out side . This would do exactly what you what at a cost just a little more then a window unit. The only draw back is it may take up too much room . You may not be looking for advice But I would hate to see you do all that work only to have something that won't work . I have seen window units installed in boats ( I have done 2) . I have seen them done in ways you would not believe , some work some do not.

this is the type of unit I am talking about that vents outside you can find similar types at Lowe's and home depot and many other places

2 A/C installs I have seen that kind of worked but not too well.

I have seen this one done more then once . The A/C (window unit ) is put thru the wall going into the head/bath room . For the A/C to work more the a few minutes you have to keep the window open in the head and unless it was breezy and fan in side the head was need to get good cooling .
Pros of this install , you can't see the a/c on the outside and you get a free sauna in the head . Cons of this install ,You get a free sauna in the head . wet floor , and basically a a head so hot that you feel like your going to pass out in .

This one is a do not do ! the window unit in installed thu the bulk head in to the engine room . Pros None Cons window A/C s are not made to be used around gas fumes ( boom) even with the blower one the a/c would stop cooling in a few minutes as the engine room heated up . to have a/c in the cabin they had to open up the engine hatches and use a fan to move the hot air . again do not try this :(

With that attitude I'm trying my best (but failed) to not say anything... Why do you think we would have any interest in just reading about your stupid idea and say nothing :?:

We need to protect anyone else from thinking it is a good idea.... our intent is not to protect you from your own stupidity because it is obvious that is a lost cause.
