Alternator problem

Post by Rodman »

My Alternator Gage was showing between 10 and 12 amps on the Gage on the dash. I replaced the Alternator today, its still showing the same thing. Any ideals ? ( Yes the Alternator was tested, it was bad)

10 -12 amps ? or 10-12 volts ? if its amps there may be nothing wrong as it may need only to put out 10-12 amps at the time . If its volts then you may not be charging . did you rev it up to 1500-2000 rpm ? many marine alternators need to be rev up to start charging ( self excited ) .
this could cause it to test bad also at the store if their tester won't turn high enough rpm .

Did it change suddenly? Was it 20Amps one day - and then 10 the next day?

I did, The boat did not have one cause the alternator had one built in. The new one did not so I wired a external voltage regulator she started charging.
