again a fuel question

Post by 9rock »

I took one of the filters off to see how the fuel looked , there was barely a drop of water in it , I had a small fuel pump so pumped out 20 gal pulled off a couple of clear bottles and again no water seperation.

I know the boat set a year and half , but I am not sure what kind if any treatment was put in and the marina has e10 fuel
I have to say I have never pumped out a tank and not got water seperation before or atleast in the filters, I am perplexed on what to do
I have 2 half tanks of fuel hate to throw it away

you can always check how volitile your samples are by using it to burn any leaves or limbs you need to burn.

9rock, If the fuel contained E10 you will not see water on the bottom of the clear container because E10 absorbs water. Get rid of it or suffer the consequences. E10 is only good for a few weeks. You can add whatever you want to it but it's still junk. jimbo36

From what I have read and been told the ethanol absorbs water and depletes the octane , if to much water is absorbed phase separation occurs and water would be at the bottom of the tank and this would indicate the fuel must be pumped out if not a additive and octane boost would be sufficient , a lot of the problams associated with the e 10 is in the fuel line and mine are all copper so i don't have those worries

My thought at this point is boost it and run it easy and see if I hear any pinging ,
I will be trolling mostly any way and I start putting lines in a half mile from my slip and trolling speed is 3-4 knots so it wont be getting much of a work out and i should be able to run whats in the tank out in a few half day trips
If the motors start pining and running funny I will pump it out then

If the the ethanol absorbed water the fuel you pumped out from the bottom of the tank will be cloudy looking.

9rock. Phase seperation occures when E10 fuel is mixed with gasoline. Not when E10 absorbs water.

I had the exact same experience when I bought my F36. The boat had been sitting on the hard for 2 years. My thought was to burn out the old gas then add the corn s--t. The marina where I had bought the boat put $100 of E10 in each tank as a goodwill gusture before I could stop them. I was running the boat from Lake Simcoe, through the Trent system to my home port in Belleville, On. I figured I may as well top off both tanks with E10, mix up an octane boost cocktail  and hope for the best. Armed with 8 filter/seperator filters away we went. I have done this trip before in 2 days of steady running and good luck at the locks. This trip took a full week with several break downs all associated with crap fuel. I even took out a Varatone muffler when it exploded due to an engine backfire from, you guessed it, crap gas. By the way. when you blow out a muffler, sea water comes in! Suprise!

Trust me when I say, Pump out all the bad gas and start fresh. I wish I had. jimbo36
