was thinking if this would work?

Post by carverman »

i got a 1982 33ft carver with twin 440's in her however no gen..
well i've got this batt.. charger and inverter coming from bob we ordered.

however i just got a 2000w honda gen. and i was wanting to know couldn't i just make up a small pig tail from gen to shore plug in at the end of my boat. .. to JUST power up my 110 side of things like coffee pot ,maybe a fan or two. i mean the thing doesn't give out 30amps so was thinking it would just place power to the 110 on the boat am i right ?

or would it do anything wrong to my boat?

put a generator shore power switch in before the panel
this will protect the inverter when on shore power from burning up

wire inverter/charger as-per instructions and you should be ok. just make sure you don't short cut anything.

I agree , I have always felt a portable gen set has no place on a boat. But if your going to use one anyway the safest place to put it is on the swim platform exhaust pointed away from the boat ,and no open thru hulls near by .

As far as wiring get a 15 to 30 amp adapter and use your shore power cable

Have any of you guys seen the Honda`s 2000 run? These gens do not put out a lot of sound or exhaust fumes. I do not see any problem with this unit being paced like on the swim deck if you want to use it when the boat is sitting still. These are very small units your exhaust from your boat will put more then this little unit will ever put out. That unit is so quite its unbelievable.

Nothing wrong with your plan of taking the output from the Honda and inputting it into your shore power 30 A plug on the Carver.
You just need a 30A to 110 V connector which you should have anyway for the chance you stop at a small Marina without 30 Amp service.
Of course location of the Honda exhaust is key, try and keep it outside the hull and close to the water line for safety. When I had my Bayliner and no genny that is what I used... often placed it on shore as the vibration from the swim platform became a little annoying over time.
It will do no harm to your shipboard electrics... just be aware that when you try to draw more than the Honda's output you will have to reset it.

Does every boater not have at least one CO/CO2 detector even if they do not use a portable Honda :?:
I would certainly hope so... along with a gas sniffer in the engine room if fuel is gasoline :!:

When you put that genny on the swim platform tie it to a cleat. That may seem very obvious but it wasn't to a friend of mine last summer. He borrowed ( oh oh ) a Honda 2000 for holidays and put it on a towel !!! so it wouldn't scratch the platform ( gulp can you see it coming? ) Well it's now in 30 feet of water.
Worst thing, he had to pay for a generator.......and he still doesn't have one.
