I have a 1976 26' Express with a 318 Chrysler (needs rebuild) with a 1:1 velvet drive. I just picked up a 360 Chrysler with a borg 2:73 : 1 tranny already attached. The 318 is a right hand rotation but the 360 is a left hand rotation. Will this make a difference in performance once installed? Also, what size prop should I be running with the higher geared 360 vice the 318?
Thank You,
James
Is it possible to determine the engine model year from the tag info:
Chrysler M360BWL-19-015 Serial # E-574884
These numbers were cast in the block 80 3 8 is this possibly a 1980?

If your shaft diameter, strut size and prop tip clearance are designed for a 1:1 ratio gear, I doubt you could use a 2.73:1. The prop for the 360 with the 2.73 would have to be twice as big in diameter as your original, and the shaft would not turn it, and it would not fit under the boat. Can't you make the 1:1 fit on the 360?

I have considered swapping the transmissions, as long as my bell housings match up. It appears that the 2.73 was used with a 1.5 " inch shaft and I'm running wiht a 1". If i do in fact swap the 2.73 for the 1:1 tranny would I need a left handed prop since the 360 is opposite rotation of the 318? I had read on another board that a left handed prop on a single inboard is rare but one person raved about how much easier it was to moor up. I guess it would just depend on which direction you came from when mooring up.Danny Bailey wrote:If your shaft diameter, strut size and prop tip clearance are designed for a 1:1 ratio gear, I doubt you could use a 2.73:1.
