I have a customer who is an engineer on the HSV-2 Swift, which is in Charleston for 2 weeks of repair work. He has offered a tour - so I'm going this week!

You know they claim this civilian leased vessel will do 35 kts, sound fast until you consider the Iowa classs battleships from WWII would do 33 and I will bet a Nimitz class carrier will beat both of them.

That was why I said that, tongue in cheek. I believe I know the navy is a governmental entitiy and ergo is not concerned about paying taxes, but oh its daddy the government is.
In other words why do they want to lease such a vessel rather than build their own. I guess if they wanted it for a limited amount time maybe.
This almost comes under the pontification section however bottom line great looking ship but leased and built in another country. US shipbuilders I am sure could have built the same or similiar ship.

Probably cheaper to lease it while they test the technology. The annual lease is less than the cost of a fighter aircraft anyway.
It is the second catamaran the Navy has leased to test new technologies and concepts associated with the Chief of Naval Operations's "Seapower 21" plan. The contract value for the first year is $21.7 million.
It is a shame we don't make anything like this, but the Aussies are way ahead of us on the wave piercing stuff. I toured the "Earthrace" boat a few years back - cool wave-piercing technology - trying to set the record for circumnavigation the globe. In fact - most of the world's ships are NOT made in the US ...
