How much Rode?

how much rode do you'se guys generally carry/use? specifically, for inland river/lake use?

the water(s) around here generally don't get below 30 foot-ish in anchoring areas. so, with that, how much rode would you more experienced types use?

currently, i have 50 ft, with a large danforth. my neighbor, who has just installed a chain windlass, gave me his rode and chain, and it's about 125 -150 feet.

i'm looking for thoughts before i change it out...pretty sure i'm going to just to be on the 'safe' side, but wanted thoughts anyhoo.

On a real windy day you may need 7:1 scope... so 30' deep is 210' line.
Generally 5:1 works if you have some chain, say 20' and a good anchor

I carry 600' of rode ad 20' of chain, but then again I anchor in anything from 5' of water to 100' of water. But generally 5:1 is the norm.

tks for the response guys. always nice to have backup for what ya thought to be right.

one reason i 'axed' is, i have a guy on the dock who SWEARS ya don't need more than 50 ft of rode, regardless around here...one of those crotchety old guys who thinks he knows it all, but never takes his own boat out... one of those.

Not to be anal about it but the calculation for scope is the distance from the edge of the deck, where the rode goes over the side of the boat.(through the chock) in addition to the water depth. ie; Scope 7;1 is;

Deck to the water, say 7' + depth 30' = 37' x 7 = 259' of rode. jimbo36

That might work for his mushroom anchor

I always like to stay on the safe side . I tie up next to a guy that knows it all about every thing .that way I any thing goes wrong we have some on to talk about back at the marina THATS THE IMPORTANT THING RIGHT??

i think it matters where you are and for where you and i are. here goes.
i ve got about 125 feet. thats what was on there when i got the boat. i havent needed this amount ever. maybe if we get to some blue water somewhere, the area we are generally at isnt overall very deep. i would have more than 50 ft because if you come up the river some where i am at you will find some deeper waters. 60-80ft in areas. anchored in this area for the day and am out and watching the boat. however if you are anchoring out for the night in the sleughs around they are really fairly shallow. 15-20 ft or less. hopefully your not dropping anchor in the river channel for the night. i would for sure have some chain on the anchor. are using all of what you currently have now?
i think 100 ft for our area. for those times you may need it. and no mushrooms, except for the pizza

as i said, i have 50ft now...it's what came on the boat. i also had a TINY danforth...amazing that guy i bought the boat from achored at all, IF he ever did.

anyhoos...

the rope/rode i have been given is about 125ft...maybe 150. didn't measure it exactly. but it does have two five ft links of chain. so, i think i'll change it out, keeping all of the chain...that should do me i would think.

i think i'll also keep the 50ft rode and maybe use it for a rear line, if i ever decide to stay out for a longer time.

speaking of anchoring in the channel...i wonder if they'd let me anchor out in the lock one weekend? i wonder what the lockmaster would say on that one? hehe

i use a rear line alot. the way some of the sleughs are, and the wind, it works great.
