BLUE HULLED 36 CONVERTABLE HOW MANY WERE BUILT
HOW MANY BLUE HULLED 36 CONVERTABLES WERE BUILT. WHEN WERE THEY INTRODUCED AND WHAT YEARS DID THEY COME OUT... REALLY INTERESTED IN KNOWING AS MUCH AS I CAN ON THIS SUBJECT. THANKS.
Ours is 73
Not sure of its original color, but our 1973 F36 has a dark blue hull. I know that it was painted around 2003/2004 with interlux products so I am not sure of the underlying gel coat color. Above the rub rail, the glass is that common off-white / cream colored gel coat.

none is right
There were a few F-36s with a little bit of blue up under the rub rail in the front like this one:

But otherwise they're all white from the factory. Mine was painted "flag blue" with Awlgrip when I bought it. My wife loved the look...that's why we bought this one even though mechanically it was trashed. But the dark color isn't a great idea on saltwater. After five minutes running, the hull is covered with dried salt and it really shows against the blue. If I were on fresh water, I wouldn't mind it a bit.

Awlgrip
I've been a little disappointed with the Awlgrip hull. You can scratch it pretty easily but some would say that's because the entire 7 step process wasn't done correctly. I don't know. However, I can say I'm very fond of Imron. I painted the topside of this boat and the entirety of my last two boats with Imron and it's pretty darn bullet-proof. You can hardly scratch Imron if you try. And fading...forget it. You'd have rebuffed and waxed gelcoat 30 times before you have to worry about that paint. It tends to last 20 years in this Florida sun and you never have to do anything to it.
The Trojan gelcoat wasn't as good as some....like the paint. Besides the paint closes those open gelcoat pores and prevents some of the deck core problems that happen.

AwlGrip
Awlgrip works great if you prep it right. I re-did my 25'er with it - 3 coats of primer/sanding + 3-4 coats of Awlgrip ...
But, you can't go wrong with Imron.
1-part Polys are ok - but don;t hold up, and then you've got osend them off later. I've been lured in too many times!
I have Sikkens on my '64 Sunbeam Tiger - amazing paint! Plan to re-do my Vette in Red Sikkens this winter.

THANKS GUYS! NOW, CAN YOU TOUCH UP AWLGRIP AND WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE IF YOU CAN. ALSO, WHAT IS THE PROCESS SHOULD YOU DECIDE TO REMOVE AWLGRIP AND REAPPLY SAME? CAN AWLGRIP BE REMOVED AND IMRON BE USED AFTER REMOVAL? I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT IMRON CANNOT BE USED BELOW THE WATER LINE. BLISTERS WILL OCCUR IF BELOW WATER LINE AND AT THE STEM, DUE TO BOW WAVE. THERE IS NOT REALLY VERY MANY COLORED HULLS HERE IN CHICAGO, ALOT OF CONJECTURE, OPINIONS, AND WIVES TALES REGARDING THIS SUBJECT HERE. SO PLEASE ENLIGHTEN ME ON THIS SUBJECT I WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR INPUT/ EXPERIENCE. TX DAVE.
Sand
Proper technique is to sand all the old paint off.
I have Awlgrip in/out/top/bottom on my 25 (trailered) - works fine!
Hre is the boat just after the final exterior coats were applied ...

LOOKS GOOD CAPT. OUT HERE EVERYONE WANTS A WHITE HULL... GO FIGURE. THERE ARE REALLY FEW PAINTED HULLS AROUND HERE. DO YOU HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH IMRON?? I WOULD LIKE TO HERE ABOUT THE PRODUCT AND ITS TENDENCIES. I AM TOLD IT IS BETTER USED AS AN ACCENT NOT AS A HULL PAINT DUE TO THE ADVERSE REACTION IT HAS WITH WATER EXPOSURE SAY AT THE WATER LINE AND STEM. I WAS TOLD THAT ITS ORIGINAL USE WAS FOR AIRCRAFT.... ANY COMMENTS.. TX DAVE.
Poly
Awlgrip is the most popular marine paint on the SE coaat. I haven't used Imron in 25 years, but it worked great on small Hydros and auaotmobiles back then (I've seen it used on hot rod frames, and brake fluid wont tough it!).
Color is the big thing on the SE coast - but dark hulls are VERY hard to keep clean (right Tony?) in saltwater, where the spray dries to a hie salty mess (like the cars in Chicago in the winter). Pastels are extremely popular - the SoBeach look ... light green, aqua, light blue, tangerince, light yellow is very nice (yes - with a white top on a big Sportie - look great). We even have a 60' Viking here in Charleston with white over pink ... ha!
Dark blue or black with a white top is a winner - but shows salt (which won't bother you in Chicago).
Take a phot of your boat and set it up so you can try different colors on your computer with a decent paint type program ... This is a quick way to evaluate ... I did it on my 25.
Here are examples of my F32 in different colors - what do you think?

Ross....Your boat looks damn good in all those colors. I may be a bit biased, but a Trojan F-series boat would look good even in fuscia, celery or moave.
There's a 38' Fountain that just cruises up and down the river here all day for the Dept. of Homeland Security. (scary waste of money 'round here - has FOUR 250hp 2-stroke Mercurys on the back) Anyway, that boat is gloss black all over so they can sneak up on the terrorists at night - I guess stealing blue crabs out of the traps or something...you know, terrorists love crabs. Anyway, that Homeland Security boat looks pretty cool all in gloss black. If I have another weekend like this one up in Gainesville at a UF football game, I may lose enough brain cells to paint my whole F-36 black.

Fountain
ha - Funny you mention Fountain. I'm going in 1/2s on a 32' Fountain. We're repowering with twin Merc 250's 2-strokes ... should be fast and a good season of fishing (fal bite in 2-3 eeks) before we sell ...
I took off my radar last night (formthe front of the bridge) ... and took all the crummy layers of paint off of the front of my bridge. What a difference! Getting ready to paint the entire topside (white 2-part Awlgrip) - and then assemble with a complete radar arch. I can see now - and the boats looks much "sportier".
I recently removed my Stateroom door and switched the head door (after sanidn and 2 coats of urethan stain and 3 coats of spar ueratahne) to the other frame (flip). Much more galley room!. And we never used the stateroom door anyway, since its really a 1 couple boat. Consider this - its a great improvement!
Off to Boston for a few days - who has a Trojan there I can visit ?????
