Prop size and/or trans ratio for 1973 36 Tri-Cabin

Post by dougl33 »

A friend of mine recently picked up a 1973 36 Tri-cabin at an auction. It's got small block fords (351) with v-drives. Does anyone happen to know what size props this boat came with? How about trans ratio of the v-drives? At least if we had that we could back into the props, but he can't read the ratios off the gears.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Hey Doug,

nice to see you venture out of Bert land once in a while. Sorry I don't have answers for you... I'm not real familiar with the 36 tri. I can tell you in the early 70's, Trojan used quite a few 1:1 gears and a reduction gear of 1.5:1 was optional in many of the F series boats... don't know on the tri.

If the boats mechanical systems are original, there is a source where your freind can get all the original documents for this boat including the invoice- which should list, engine, gear, ratio and prop specs. It's was pretty reasonable when I bought mine (under $100 if I remeber correctly) and was well worth it just for the manuals and electrical diagrams. All you need is the hull ID #.

John,

Thanks for the response. I try to branch out. I also keep an eye on the Hatt site as well.

When my friend got the boat, it had 17 inch props, but he thought they were too small so he put a set of 20 inch props on. Now he's only getting 3000rpms at WOT. I told him that I thought the 17's might be pretty close, but that we were just guessing until we could get the trans ratio. What's the source you're talking about?

I just noticed that your from Mass. Where exactly do you hail from? I'm in M'head, but keep the boat in Salem.

Doug,

I'm from Attleboro but I dock my boat in Swansea MA. The 17" props may have been correct especially if the gears are 1:1

The source is a gentleman that was a Trojan employee back in the day and my understanding is that he acquired most of the Trojan Companies document library. He's very knowledgeable even down to knowing many of the original players and the companies rather detailed history and evolution. His name is John and he has a small company called Marine tech in PA. His number is (717) 684-4145. Bob at Beacon marine (this sites sponsor), is also a very valuable source for info and parts especially.
