Finally determined Prop Size
Well Okeeeee DoKeeeeee,
Finally got the boat out of the water, the prop mounted is a 14R14, and is in pretty bad shape! if I remember correctly a decrease in pitch by 1 is an increase in RPM by 400, sound right? this boat should be running between a 14 /10 - 14/12 pitch prop I think, it looks like I am going to have to buy a new prop but before I do just want to make sure I'm heading down the right road because as the tag for this new 14R10 3 blade cupped 1" shaft is $550.00 plus tax!!!!!
Any input? Any good used props in this range out there ???

why not have yours fixed and repiched? It would save you alot .I would try 14x12 with no cup . I believe 14x10 maybe on the small side as your running a big block .

Had it checked out Prowler, it is in real bad shape, even looks like someone tried to braze a patch on a blade, prop shop said they can't pitch it down due to minute cracks & pitting, just e-mailed Foofer B he had a 14R12 few weeks ago, hopefully he still has it!
Let me know if ya hear anything around
I agree, I would like to try a 12 and see how that works out too.

Re-Pitch
Hey Prowler, took your advice, prop is in for re-pitch from 14/14 down to a 14/12 no cup, won't be ready until Wed 6/23, it looked like the 14/14 prop that was running on the boat had no cup, prop was actually in good shape!! A savings of $400 ( I'M GOING TO DISNEY WORLD !!!!! )

Engine Swap
Hey Prowler,
I was thinking about retiring my 96 Dodge Ram it has a Cummins 5.9L Only 120,000 miles on it.
Can I use this to convert the Trojan to Diesel, I'm sure I would have to swap tranny and all, is it a Huge Deal, I really like the Cummins and would love to have it in the boat, to pull the Chrysler and have it rebuilt I'm probably lookin at $ 3500 - $ 4000 I can have the block & heads done locally for < $ 2500 being as I have the Cummins already what do you think it would run to marinize it or can it be done at all?
Thanks

All's Good
I want to thank everyone, your information has been invaluable it getting the boat squared away, put the new prop on and low and behold 3600 rpm, 17 mph ( GPS Speed ) 4 bbls working good, ( although don't want to use them often !!! ) Running 14R12 pitch with very small cup. Installed an electric fuel pump, used it to drain residual fuel from tank, re-filled with Ethenol Free fuel ( pricey ! ) Boat runs great now and I'm happy with the speed. Again Thanks

prowlersfish wrote:Abster , is 3600 your max rpm ? if so you still need to get your top rpm up to 4000 or so , I belive you should be a liltle fast at wot also , What is the HP of your engine ?
The 440 was produced from 1966 until 1978, making it the last version of the Chrysler RB block. It had a cast iron block with iron heads and a bore of 4.32 inches (109.73 mm).
From 1967 to 1971 the high performance version was rated at 375 (370 in '71) SAE gross bhp (280 kW) at 4700 rpm with a single four barrel carburetor, and from 1969 to 1971, the highest output version had a 3-2 bbl. intake setup ("440 Six Pack" for Dodge, "440 6 Barrel" for Plymouth) and 390 (385 in '71) hp (291 kW) with three two barrel Holley carburetors. However these performance ratings are severely lowered. Some say the reason was for insurance purposes, in any case the 440 "Six Pack" became the second fastest muscle car engine in the 1969½ Roadrunner. It ran 12.7 in the 1/4 mile on Goodyear Polyglas tires and 4.10 gear ratio. Modern engine dynos of the 440 "Six Pack" and the 413 and 426 Max Wedge engines have shown the 440 "Six Pack" to make 505 horsepower and 495 foot pounds of torque, the 413 making 490 horsepower and 526 foot pounds of torque, and the 426 making 522 horsepower and 501 foot pounds of torque. Only the 1968 Dodge Dart 426 Hemi A990 (10.80¼ mile time) and the 1968 Plymouth Barracuda 426 Hemi (10.60¼ mile time) were quicker.
From 1972 on the horsepower ratings were lower because of the new Clean Air Act, which forced the output to be muffled to a rated 335 bhp (250 kW) SAE gross at 4400 rpm through a drop in compression, cam timing and other tuning measures. Also in 1972, the U.S. industry switched to SAE net ratings, that is, with alternator, air cleaner, mufflers, and other real-world, power-consuming equipment attached, which resulted in a more realistically rated 225 bhp (168 kW) SAE net at 4400 rpm, which very closely coincided with period German DIN ratings and TÜV measurements.
The high output 440 was marketed as the Magnum in Dodges, the Super Commando in Plymouths, and the TNT in Chryslers.
