hello all, as summer is here and my 1976, 36 tri fly (gotta get a signature) is still not in the water I decided to launch and finish it in the water, at least with a deadline to get it in I will push the repairs. Now the problem...11 weeks ago when I called my broker her quoted me and asked if I had a survey, I told him yes but that it read like a horror show, I was told no problem, when I called last Monday to arrange payment this week and at his request faxed the survey I am told I need another one to reflect the work I have done, its a bit late now as the marine transport firm are arranged for Monday! I called the transport firm Thurs a.m. as sooon as I was told, and although not happy, they understand. The surveyer I called is 2-3 weeks away....does anyone know of insurance I can get with just photo's? With survey pending? The boat is structurally sound the survey I have is just for insuance evaluation and puts the value at $6,000.00 There were no strutural issues raised in the report. Or perhaps a surveyer who can at least molify the insurance untill all is complete and a proper value can be estimated. Sorry for the long winded post

Don't know of anyone who will insure an 'old' boat without recent survey.

Is it an option to launch and let her float without full insurance for a couple of weeks until the surveyor can get there, then have it hauled at the marina to allow surveyor to do their job? Will cost you a bit more (for the lift fee), and you are at risk for that period of time, but at least gets you floating.

Some marinas won't give you a slip unless you have Liability insurance... but don't think they care about Fire/Theft/Collision/etc... the Insurance company may be willing to extend you Liability coverage without survey, and add the other coverages on once survey is done.

If you do this, I wouldn't leave the dock until the insurance is in place.

I just got a policy with progressive here in florida, no survey or anything, $30,000 agreed value.

I am surprised you can get the hull covered with out a survey , and with agreed value on top of that .

many company's will insure liability only with out a survey

We have all of our policies with State Farm and when I purchased our '79 Tri-cabin they did not ask for a survey before insuring the vessel. I had one done but they never even mentioned it. They insured it for fair market value.

Late last fall we had a very strong wind storm at our marina with lots of boats damaged and our canvas was shredded. They paid for new canvas totally minus our deductible.

I have never seen a company give full coverage with out a survey
and belive me I have asked (maybe they don't like me )

There are insurance companies that specialize in other areas and aren't very savvy when it comes to marine coverage. As such, they don't put much wieght on the need for a current survey (that is slowly changing). The trick with these is that you have to be savvy about what you need in marine coverage and make sure you get it.

thanks for the input all! I am only interested in liabilty for now to satisfy the needs of my club. The insurance stance is what if the engines fail and I hit a $100,000 boat and sink it? What if it catches fire and it wipes out my dock and 15 other boats? It is the liability that scares them. I had a shipright out today who I know and he is going to write something up for me on the boats condition, we are going to submit a copy of his papers and hope the insurance accept this. Is there accreditation for surveyers? or is this a gig like home inspectors who need no license and are wrong more often than not,and are not liable if what they say is wrong?

No survey should be needed for most liability insurance , check around .

However in cases when you need a survey they should be a S.A.M.S or N.A.M.S Surveyor SAMS being the most common . If they are not find one that is . A surveyor that is not done by a member of the above is worthless .

update... progressive does not cover in Canada, state farm will not cover a boat older than 1984 without a survey, I also tried to just get liablity with the above and one other...no go

Allstate covered my '78 F26 for 100/300k for very little. And no survey.

Don't know if it will help you or not, but I am with Robertson and Robertson (brokers) in Markham. They have me insured with Aviva. Never had an issue with them yet (3 old claims, no hassles paying up).

allstate also needs a survey as does aviva, any thoughts on a decent surveyer? I am calling around now but the only one I reached is $800.00 and 2-3 weeks away

I also have Sate Farm with $30,000 agreed value, $300,000 liability, full coverage, no survey. $490.92 per year.

seems that the u.s. firms will do it w/o survey, not one in Ontario that I have contacted will so now I will just have to survey. Would have been nice if I had of been told 10 weeks ago when I first applied
