heat exchanger leaking - can it be repaired ?

Post by mpulsev10 »

So my port engine overheated over the weekend, we put a pressure tester on it and it is bleeding coolant into the raw water through the heat exchanger. I have a local radiator shop that welds radiators, but have yet to call about a heat exchanger, does anyone have any insight on this ? Can they be repaired or do i have to bite the bullet and buy a replacement ? I saw the post for lenco's but no prices.

thanks.

It could be an internal failure such as a crack but most times when a heat exchanger leaks it is due to corrosion and the corrosion attacks the entire internal surface. Does your heat exchanger have end caps that you can take off and see the inside?

If its leaking where they can get to it it can be soldered . However , if it failed in one place could it be weak in another due to corrosion like Danny said ? sometimes its better to bite the built and replace it .

BTW these have zincs in them do you replace them on a regular bases ? most people ignore or don't know about them .

it does have the caps on the end. I was looking at them on lencos website and saw the zincs. Definately a good idea to replace regularly.

Well the one is definately shot, took to a radiator repair place in daytona that fixes these. They tried soldering several tubes, kept popping more. Anyone know where i can get one wholesale ?
