haha ya i guess i would have no idea whats to come of owning a boat! So is this going to be a decent boat reliable and what not? its going to huntington beach after its all done and does anyone know how much fuel this things gonna take just cruising around and how big are the fuel tanks

The yacht was put up for auction on eBay for some charity and I happen to win it at a stupid low price. So my buddy and I are going to update it clean it all up and travel around the US with it not sure if this Is posible but I'm sure gong for it. It does need work to the interior and what not also needs new batterys but the carbs were rebuilt last year and the guy stated it ran. And tips on getting these engines tuned up well would help out alot. There the 255 series. Like I said I know really nothing about this yacht. The hull is in decent shape no holes stress cracks nothing props look good shafts and what not. What's the first thing I should do?

The first thing you should do is research. The second thing you should do is understand what you might be buying. The third and fourth things are survey and mechanical inspection.

Since you skipped all that, we go back to what sehord suggested... pray...

But since you are where you are, I suggest you go back and do #s 1 through 4 after the fact to find out what you have, figure out if you wasted your money or got a good deal, and make sure you aren't going to kill anybody with it.

A boat is not a car. If it breaks down you can't just pull over to the side of the road and wait for a tow truck. Gas or oil leaks don't just lead to drops on the road, they can result in deadly explosions. Structural issues can cause something to snap when you hit a wave or a wake, and the boat to sink in seconds.

Please take the time to understand what you have just bought, and learn enough about it to enjoy it safely.

Go to your local books a million and pick up a copy of Chapmans Plotting. (Get the hard back version, not the paper back) It a very big and heavy book, so it should be easy to find. Take it home and sit down with your boating partner and then take turns wacking each other over the head with it. Then, and only then, open it and read it through. Boating is one of the most rewarding things you will do in your life. People persure the sea throughout their lives and often dream of it more than do it, but the lure is tremendous. By reading your posts, you are obviously very young and have no idea about boats, and much more importantly the sea. There is a tremendous difference between cruising the bay with your drinking buddies and navigating through the Panama Canal going from pensacola to Huntington Beach as you have proposed ( I have made that trip twice on personal boats...) You can cost yourself a ton of money, but more importantly as has been posted here, you can kill your passengers or those who attempt to save you if you get in trouble. Have someone knowledgeable go over the boat with you and someone who will teach you the way to navigate the waters. Consider a local captains school to get a 6-pack license to teach you invaluble information for your future. We all started out as newbies, so everyone has to learn, but take it from me, the road of hard knocks is long and bumpy, like a marriage to a fat grumpy woman, you'll look back and say "what the hell was I thinking.... And by the way, once you figure all this out and make a trip from Pensacola to California, remember I am about 90 miles East of you in Panama City, so if I see you I'll be sure and let you know you started out the wrong direction...... I'll keep my eye out.....

"is this going to be a decent boat reliable and what not?" That depends on the condtion ,Thats why I recc a survey . how much fuel will it burn ? at 15 knots I would guess 20+ gals a hour . If you run slow (6-7 knots)you may get just over 1 MPG .

A survey is haveing a pro ( make sure there SAMS) check out the boat . you will need this done for insurance most likely a survey would run around 500 +-

First, I would try to determine exactly what you have as far as engines. What year, horsepower, displacement, etc and whether they have good compression, oil pressure and any knocks (worn bearings, wrist pins, pistons, etc). Then I would determine what on those engines is raw water cooled so I could start checking those parts for replacement. Depending on your mechanical ability you may want to hire a mechanic to do an engine survey...but be careful or you WILL get ripped off. Is the boat in the water or on jackstands??

Are you trucking it to Huntington Beach (Surf City)? You might want to check into trucking and preparation costs. If it is the model with the fly bridge you will run into a lot of expense just getting it ready to put on the truck and then setting it back up when you get it there. Trucking a boat from Florida to California will be very expensive.
