We settled on the 36 Carver and drove to Florida with cash in hand to buy it. Well we were lied to and it was a piece of Poo. While driving back to MD my wife jumped on the net and accidently found a broker selling a 1987 F36 Tri Cabin just a 2 hour drive from where we live. She had just came back on the market the day before due to financing falling through. I looked at her the next day and 3 days after that we paid twice what the Carver was going for. I never knew anything about Trojan until now but will never own a different boat as we are head over heels in love with the Tri-Cabin.
I know you'll find the boat of your dreams.
i was the one that the financing fell through on. (AND I'M STILL ANGRY AT KNOT10 YACHT BROKERS FOR PUTTING THAT LITTLE DIG ON THE AD) i hope you had a better experience with them than we did. they were terrible, just terrible, to phil and i, (they played us for all it was worth and strung us along for weeks just because i had my own broker working for me and not them directly) i was heart broken that the deal broke down because i knew what i almost had. i fell in love with that tri cabin at the rendez vous in st.michaels and was beyond excited when she came on the market in march of 2010. i cannot tell you how crushed i was when i was not able to obtain 'the perfect tri cabin'. i'm STILL torqued at knot10 and i spit at their very name. but i'm glad it worked out for you.

Wow!!!! I had no idea when I joined yesterday this would happen. I was so excited to find a group of great guys who shared my new found passion for Trojan that I just had to share my story, not realizing that a few of you actualy knew about the boat. I am truly sorry about your experience with knot-10 and can imagine your pains.
Being a very honest person I have to say that my experience with them was exactly opposite, probably because I didn't have a broker and they got the whole commission. I had them running around like chickens with their heads cut off because I had cash in hand and I wanted the boat within 48 hours.
If it's any consolation she had a lot of hidden flaws that would have been expensive if I wasn't a yacht mechanic. Like 2 days after I got her into my home slip the water system exploded and flooded the master bed (with my wife sleeping in it) because someone had done some DIY. And the genny that worked fine during my initial inspection turns out it would only run about 10 minutes and then shut down. I only ran it for 5 minutes under load during inspection. We found this out while out fishing in the 97 heat. One of the fridges went shortly after we bought her and so on. If you would have bought her you would have paid around 7k so far fixing the hidden things.
You would also believe in fate if you knew the whole terrible story that finaly led us to this boat as I only touched on a very small part of it in my original post.
I know fate will lead you to the perfect boat and I hope to meet you guys at an event in the future.

WHOLLY CRAP!! as the buying process unfolded, it took longer and longer to get any answers from knot10, much less having them work with my broker, which, i am legally allowed to do. once i said that kim at mcdaniel yacht sales was woking with me, knot10's attitude completely changed. one of the brokers even called me and said, ''ya know, the 'widow' is unsure if she wants to sell to two guys, if you know what i mean. she is very uncomfortable with that" ---(i was floored over this remark. i could not believe they even crossed that line) no sir, they were just the nastiest group of people i've ever had the displeasure of meeting or dealing with. marc, the owner of knot10, has really ticked off a great many other brokers in the area because of the back room things they do. i will bet you, they tinkered with the tri cabin to get her to sell. they also ran rip-shod over the widow of the owner. my mom was very pragmatic during this amazingly frustrating situation, and she said, ''well, maybe there is a hidden reason you are not able to buy this particular tri cabin''. (i wonder if she had a gut feeling) i still liked her though, and honestly felt she was one of the best, if not the best examples of a tri cabin out there. phil was loving the idea of the RIB and motor so he could buzz around the marina. oh well, it was not meant to be, but, i'm glad she has a good home. as for passion for trojan boats, you have come to the right site. i've never met a group of people so devoted to a brand. not sure if you are aware, by my folks owned a tri cabin from 1972 (factory delivered) until 2008. she is now for sale, yet again, in oceanside california. sadly, time, logistics, and funding do not allow me to obtain her and bring her back into the family. to be honest though, that particular design is not really 'dog friendly' and the back cockpit and bulkheads were the weak spots of that design.
will keep you posted on my search.

did you also remove the name, OUTTALIMITS from here transom like the 'widow' requested of us if we were able to buy her? that was one of the clauses in the sales agreement that we looked at. the name had to come off before she left the dock in rock hall. no questions asked, it had to be that way or no deal. a reasonable request, but man did knot10 drive that home. as for the 'hidden flaws', i wonder if the spirit of the previous owner was not ready to give her up so quickly. i've always had a wierd feeling buying a boat from someone that has passed on. i'm sure it's just me, but an odd feeling just the same.

As for the name, they tried to pull that same crap on me. But there was no way it could be done in 2 days. So I told them flat out "It's not going to happen and I'm willing to walk right this minute!" He damn near got on his knees and the issue was dropped while I told the widow that I would do it asap. I guess I had a lot of stuff on my side; like I am a VERY forcefull person thanks to college level training in Sales and Management. And the fact that I mentioned a larger Searay for sale just 15 minutes away. I told him "I WILL have a boat in my slip this coming Saturday!" That's when they started jumping through hoops, working over time, and met my deadline of 1pm Thursday right to the minute.
I'm not sure about the widow making comments like that, she seemed sooooo intelegent and PC. But I have no clue what her Engineer husband was like. I believe the broker had someone else interested as when I showed up for the 1st. look a neighbor said "So your back for a second look?" When he saw the confused look on my face he appoligized and walked away.

She just might be the nicest Tri out there despite the little problems I had. The final comment from the surveyor read "This yacht is the closest to BRISTOL condition we have ever seen of a 1987 model year in our 27 years of doing business." Then gave a value of almost twice what we paid. Fate is a funny thing!
It's wild you talked of spiritual things: The day after we got her home I, and my wife, started to think the same thing. It was very weird. But I think I took care of it and the weird stuff has subsided. The people at the dock where she was located told me over and over that the boat was the Life's Passion of the guy and he worked on her literally every chance he had for almost 12 years. They said he was obsessed with her. And it shows in her condition.
I am looking forward to many years of talking with my new Trojan friends.

rob, i do not, for one minute, believe the 'widow' said any of that stuff about phil and myself. i firmly believe it was marc from knot10 and his crafty little minions. one thing i did notice though, the slip holders around the boat were like protective dogs. they looked us up one side and down the other, and when i told one that my marina was in middle river, he stiffened up and said, ''oh, on the OTHER side of the bay''..... another one said that this particular tri cabin was way out of my league. when i explained that i always loved the tri cabin since my folks had one for nearly 40 years, he said, ''well, you just need to understand that this particular one is special.'' believe me, ever since i saw her at the 2009 rendez vous i knew how special she was. you could just tell.

i know. i found that remark rather odd too. rock hall is roughly less than an hour away from middle river, but sometimes it gets a bad rap. it's actually a very nice location. the marina where the tri cabin was is a condo like setting and believe me, they are very particular about who gets into the secluded gated community there. a very odd experience to say the least.

LOL..... your right about the neighbors. I was totaly shocked about how nosey they were. But I shut them down quickly - can't stand that. They even stuck their noses up about the older Jeep I drive and semi-complained about where I parked for the sea trial. But I said to the crowd "I don't mind parking there" (I don't think they liked that lol). One of the neighbors, probably the one that made the comments to you, actualy came on the sea trial and thought he was some kind of major captain. Due to the small craft advisory that afternoon none of them could dock the boat so I rather sternly told them "How bout you all sit down and I'll take over" I don't think they liked that but I got her home. I also think they were all shocked when I showed up to take possition wearing rather ratty clothes, but when I'm looking at a 4 hour cruise i dress comfortable.

OMG we are going to get along so well when we finally meetup! i dressed like i always do, in other words, not in 'yachting attire'. they hated that. one said to me, ''i dont believe you can park your vehicle there''. i said that my subaru forester will do just fine where it is thank you very much. another one mentioned my BDU green yarmulkah with hebrew writing on it. he said, oh, i see you're jewish. i remarked ''yes, it was part of my uniform when i was in the israeli airforce. i know how to use an uzzi, and am trained in krav maga which is israeli close quarters hand to hand self defense. matter of fact, my nick name is THE MIGHTY HEBREW. oh, and by the way, this is my partner phil of 14 years. care to know anything else?'' he made a very hasty retreat. man i so would have loved to pressed the point further, but hey, it's their problem. what a putz.

LOL... I can't stand Snobby people. The one dude even asked for permission to take pictures of me as I left the harbour for the last time then ran up to his 3rd. floor private balcony and must have snapped a hundred pics as I cruised off into the sunset. What the HELL is up with that? I really did feel like I was in another universe there. But on with this new chapter in our lives!!
