I was debating whether to remove the hull stripes last year and dropped that idea once I found out they were paint/clearcoated.
Now that the boat has gone through another season they look really bad, a couple of new/big scratches.
So, I'm going to have to get them off. Anyone done it and can share how?
I've heard EZ-Off oven cleaner might be an option. Heavy compound with a wool pad would probably do it with a lot of work. Soda blasting? I know that will get them off but don't know if the surface will be workable as a result. The clear is pretty flaky, that should be easy.
I want to try and get them off w/o having to paint the entire hull. I'll probably have to live with a shadow in the gell coat for at least a season or two.

Bob you'll most likely see that shadow for ever, I used Goof Off and Goo gone with a razor scraper (a good one) and many hours of cleaning and rubbing. A worn out greenie will help to.
And why not put new ones back on with the UV vinyls we have today they should last for another 30 yrs

When I first got my 10 meter I thought those stripes were antiquated.
Time came to do th erefit and repaint the transom and it was an opportunity to freshen her up, modernize her.
Thought about removing the stripes completely.
Thought about killing the cranberry/grey color scheme for a nother color
Blue?
How about a new "fashion color" ?
Maybe turquoise?
Aqua like the Hatteras?
Maybe lemon/chiffon/merange yellow with the grey/silver.
Now that could be nice....
In the end, we chose to stay with the cranberry AND to completely reshoot the hull graphics.
After considering it, they are really distinctive and they set her apart from the Ski Rays and anythging else out there.
The teak ties it all together.
Seriously, you might consider getting a QUALITY UV protected vinyl and simply re-doing what you have.
Freshened up you might be surprised.
By the way, someone paid a premium of (I think about ) $1,000 to have that option added.
I was where you are now.
Thought hard about it.
I'm keeping mine.

interesting....
I didn't know that the stripes were an option. That would probably explain the 10 meters I've seen w/o them. I assumed that they were removed.
I have three shades of metallic green, not my first color choice. I like the early color schemes (like your '83 RWS) and I like the smaller accent stripes like they started doing in '90. My '88 is in between the two. If you look at pictures from '83 - 1991, the stripes get smaller and smaller every year, like 1950's car fins.
I actually wouldn't mind new stripes in a more neutral tone but my canvas is a aqua green and thus begins the snowball rolling down hill
I'm going to try removing them off the transom above the water line and see where that leads me. I'll keep you guys posted.

The transom on the Internationals has a slight negative rake.
I believe this part of the design was supposed to be accenuated with those graphics.
