Windlass

I have a real POS windlass on my boat, got it with the boat a long time ago. Heck, I don't even know the manufacturer, it's that messed up. But it still works...

I think I am going to replace with a "Good" windlass. I like the durability and free fall feature, which I don't enjoy now. My friends all have them and have no complaints. I also like the features and looks of the Lewmar.

Any feedback on what works for you?

I have been using a Lewmar Freefall FF600 model which I added new in 2002. The boat was originally not equipped with a windlass. This is a 10 Meter International.

The combination chain and rope gypsy works well.

In these waters (West coast of Florida) I use 30' of chain and 170' of three strand rode.

The freefall feature makes anchoring very quick and easy.

If I was going to do it again I'd add a control at the bow as well as at the helm. Someday I'll make that upgrade.

I have used the Good free-fall rope windlass on my '86 10 meter since new (new to me in '96) and it has served well. As a part of my recent repower project, I anticipated the installation of a rope/chain windlass. I have extended my bay cruising to include coastal diving. As of now, the windlass is still in service. I have 300' of 5/8" rope and 20' of 5/16" chain and have to pull the chain by hand. I'll be replacing the windlass soon and will be selling the "Good" for a fraction of the cost of a new one. If you're not in a hurry to buy one, I'm not looking to make a fortune, I just don't need another boat part sitting on my garage shelf collecting dust.
