Running lights

Post by fourreins »

I was reading another post and they were talking about the location of running lights. I actually have a question about this. When I moved our 10.8 to it's new location they had to remove the bridge for the transfer. Now that the bridge is back on the boat I am thinking some of the wires are connected incorrectly. Should my anchor light on the bridge turn on by itself? Currently it turns on with the white light on the front of the bridge along with the aft white light and I think the red and green. I am thinking the front white bridge light, aft white light, red and green should be on one switch and anchor by itself.

They can be on the same switch (2 position) or on 2 switch's the front part on with the Stern and running lamps and both on when anchor light is on .

So, at anchor should all three white lights be on or just the one on my bridge? Also, when under way should the running lights (red and green) be on with the white light on the front of the bridge along with the stern light.... and the anchor light off. I am thinking of the anchor light as the one on top of the bridge that I can extend when anchored. I thought that whould work independent of the others. So confused....

So from that other thread Prowlersfish said...

Yes but it needs to be a split type( combo ) with 2 bulbs front part used for ruining lamp and both parts use for anchor . like this

Putting a light right in the line of site is just plan stupid . and the fact its legal is even dummer and many boats are made that way , and to do it when they have another place to put it it like the arch I just don't under stand .

I wonder how many accidents happen because of this where the opp. can't see ?
.................

So, you can't have the aft part of the anchor light on while running?

Does it really matter?

That light layout is correct for running.
The anchor/running light has two position operation... sometimes one switch sometimes two but the on situation is the same, both front and back for anchor all other lights off. Front only for running with other red, green and white rear on.

My set up has two white lights. One I believe is designated just for anchoring and and it is located on the bridge on a pole which can be extended. It is located to the right of the steering wheel. This light is solid white all the way around. My second white light which I believe is a running light is located on the front side of the bridge about half way up between the front windows and the top of bridge. I'm sure this has a name but I don't know what this part of the boat is called.... This light comes on with the other white light which I believe is the anchor light. My thought is that it should come on with all the other running lights and not just with the designated anchor light. It is correct just to have the solid white light on when at anchor????

The anchor light needs to be on during dark hours when at anchor, above the highest point of the boat and seen 360 degrees.

Adding to Wowzer's correct statement:

You need 1 or 2 Whit Nav Lihgts:
> 1 can be the same anchor light on smaller vessels or
> can can have a white Nav light above the highest point of the boat displaying 112.5 degrees to each side (225 total) on center

Your Red/Green lights need to face forward and be seen 112.5 degrees on its side (112.5 degrees from straigt forward = 22.5deg abaft of the beam to each side)

underway- red and green lighting and a "steaming" light this would be the one on the bridge with a arch vis of 225 degrees (facing forward) this light is for a vessel underway less than 50 meters long. You will also have your stern light, 135 degrees.

The light you are talking about is the anchor light, 360 degrees. Used only while the anchor is down. If your boat is less than 12 meters, the 360 degree "anchor" light can be used underway with out the steaming light. On a larger boat, like yours, you would not have both the lights on your bridge on at the same time, just the steaming light.

I hope that helps

Got it! I appreciate all the feedback.... now I have to figure out how to make the anchor light come on by itself.

May I suggest picking up a copy of "Chapman Piloting and Seamanship". $30 at West Marine.

Trojan uses a 2nd pair of wires running up to a separate anchor-lite bulb.
