FINALLY FINISHED------------NEW PROJECT

Post by foofer b »

Just bought my first project boat. A 1978 Snug Harbor fiberglass 10' dinghy. It is a little rough and needs a good deal of work, and I am hoping you guys can give me some advice.
First, what should I rebond the two hulls together with? I am thinking of marine 4200 and pop rivets in s/s or aluminum.
Second, What is the best way to remove the old bottom paint (antifouling)?
Third, I would like to repaint the bottom, if it needs it, and want your suggestions as to paint and application method.

Here are some before pics.

Wow. That thing need some work. Looks like the transom wood is shot too. Make sure you replace it before you reattach the hulls. Should be an interesting project. 5200 is more permanent and takes longer to cure. 4200 is less permanent but cures quicker. For reattaching the hulls, I'd use 5200. While you have the hulls separated, you may want to pour some 2 part foam into it. That stuff is extremely sticky and attaches to everything. Just make sure you don't pour too much, it will deform the hull if it has no place to expand. Also will add more permanent floatation for safety and rigidity. Just some thoughts...

foofer..... I love it!!! Perfect project to keep you outta Hooters  JK
If it were me I would wait until my yard had the sand blaster set up and tip them a 50 to blast it. Definitely agree on 5200
The transom should be pretty easy since your taking everything apart, try to get the old out in one piece to use as template.
As far as the bottom...... are you leaving her in the water?? If so, maybe paint the same color as your stripes??
Winter garage projects are Awesome!!!
Keep us posted with pics please :)

I would use West System to re-bond the two hulls together. Then I'd look at installing a Buick turbo V6 with an Arneson surface drive. Yee Ha

I know you are in the sunshine state, but I am pretty sure her idea would involve a place where the sun doesn't shine.

Good luck - you are a brave soul.

She came home and said she was sure it would look better if I washed it, but not much better, wondered aloud how much I'd spent on it, and asked if I actually thought she would ever sit in it!

OH and the green converse are my son's trademark.

Well at least you're still sleeping in the house and don't have any foreign objects shoved you know where.

Tell her it's like a fine artwork..

You have to stand back to truly appreciate it.

Perhaps as far as 3-4 miles...

Don't listen to em. Keep the faith.
I bought this 1960 alum speed boat earlier this year. The Mrs. was not real impressed. The seats were so rotten you could push your finger through the wood, and there was about 2" of bat/rodent debris in it. Had not been ran in 15+ years and almost caught on fire when I put gas in it and tried to start it for the first time.

After about 300 hours of work, it turned out looking like this:
