Post by Tommy »

Did Trojan ever move to non wood stringers, such as an '87 F36? Thanks from a Trojan wannabe. Tommy

one suggestion is the International Series vessels that were engineered and built with hollow stringers and full vacuum liners.

Wood stringers

Post by Tommy »

As they cannot be visualised in their entire length, if there is a problem with rot, where would it be expected?

I happen to agree on wood being the best stringer material , the only down side is rot if poorly done . In all other aspects it exceeds any other material IMO and I am sure there are many builders that would agree ,

I appreciate everyone's opinion. Although a long time lake boater (North Alabama), my salt water experience is not as extensive. Had a 28 ft Carver many years ago in Destin, that was stored out of water. Have been looking around, and considered, among others, Trojan and Chris Craft. Trojans certainly seem more numerous and available in the Deep South, so they are strong contenders. Will plan, for sure, on survey pre purchase, but I understood the stringers are not 100% accessible. If there was a problem, is there a place to make an extra effort to visualize? Many thanks.

Tommy,

You don't mention your size range, however this should be of interest:

My ideal would be the F36. I've looked at a couple, and they would fill all my wants. Have my eye on one, but will keep looking for a while.

Land locked in Birmingham AL-do my lake boating at Smith Lake in North Alabama. Not sure where I'd like to have my boat. Familiar with Destin, but wife has three sisters on the low country SC coast (Hilton Head, Bluffton, and Beaufort). South FL a bit too far, unless I hit the lottery!

I read that Trojan put no wood below the waterline, wouldn't that mean that the stringers are re-inforced fiberglass? I too was wondering about wood rot in the bottom of the 1980 F 25, I bought. Not something you can easily get at to inspect.

Edit: found out they are wood, glassed over, Thanks prowlerfish
will have them inspected, lots of time before spring launch

Why not stay closer to home?
Many Birmingham residents keep their boats on Lake Guntersville, and hour plus from Birmingham.
Lake Guntersville is on the Tennesse river system and affords plenty of travel opportunity... upstream to Chattanooga or downstream to Nashville or Mobile.

If you like fishing Lake G is among the best I'm told.
