THE NORWEGIAN TROJAN

Post by pk »

Happy New Year Folks! Now it is time for an update from this side og the Atlantic Swamp. Today we have a snowstorm. It started to snow early this morning, and now just before midnight we´ve got nearly a half meter of this white terrible stuff. And tonight the wind started up. In this moment we have around 15 meter / sec. increasing! Last week it was cold as h---, temperature on low -30 degrees Celcius. The main fjord to Oslo (capitol city in Norway) is still open and almost free for ice, but the smaller fjords and all the lakes around here is solid frosen. Stiff water....

I got a visit from Santa this last X-mas, and he brought a couple oof diesels for me. I must have been a good boy the last year. As some of you maybe remember, I´ve got a pair of MAN diesels. Unfortunately they vere too tall for the engine room. So them engines is now in another boat in the same harbour. And he is real proud of them..... My "new" engines is a pair of 7.3 Liters on 300Hp each. I have got them cheap, complete with gearboxes, shafts, propellers, struts and bearings, instruments and harness. And there was a full maintenance record for both engines. It even followed 4 new oilfilters, 4 new dieselfilters, new enginemounts, and one palletbox with brand new spares! I could not say NO to Santa.....

Just tossed in a pic of my grandson Marcus, at seven years age. I´m going to sell the aircraft this winter / spring. I have lost my medicals, and are not allowed to do the flying anymore.

Well, back to the Trojan: I have found a company in USA called Ocean Dynamics. I think I got it here on the Forum..... Anyway, they have made new corner frames for both sides, put in glass and weatherstrips / rubberseals. It was expencive, yes it was. Rest of the glass is made from my brother in law, he own a glass company. Offcourse they do only windows for homes and houses, but this was no problem for him. Hurrah!!

Congrats!

7.3L diesels - look like V8's. Mercruiser/Navistar 444's?

I have this engine in my Excursion - love it! Just drive 2450 miles over Christmas with 6 people and a dog - 19.5mpg avg @ 70mph.

The entire engine room is cleaned and repainted. I will start with insulating and sound proofing all bulkheads and walls down there next week, before I put in the harness and looms. I have got all new seacocks / valves, new waterheater, new battery bank, get rid of the old Onan Genset, and I will put in brand new dieselfilters with waterseperators on, one to each engine, put in new Shore Power units, and I will replace all bilge pumps. In time I think we are in beginning of March then.

Here is the remains of the toilet. It was cracked, so I took it away. But I have found it difficult to find a toilet / toiletbowl that will fit in there. The old toilet was a Mansfield 806. I know Jabsco have something that maybe could fit in, but those toiletbowls are too tall. I think the bottom of bowl will rest on the hull deep down there. I have contactet a company in your country for help. So we´ll see.

Yesterday I was out for shopping things for the Trojan. My wife yelled at me "you have to be careful with the money!!!". So I went out, bought a refridgerator for 230V 12V and propane/buthane. And so I bought a propane cooktop with 3 flames, I also got a Webasto diesel heater for heating the coolingwater in both engines and cockpit / salon heater. When I came home, she was a little furius..... Last nite I slept alone...on the couch in TV-room. :(

When it comes to the wife and my toys, I generally live by the motto that it is better to ask for forgiveness than permission.

I've come home over the years with 3 or 4 different boats that she had no idea I was looking at.

That said, I did pour her a few rummers and suggested the Trojan to her last year before I bought it.

That approach seems to have worked good too. It also seems to have avoided the spending spree on her part that usually followed my prior purchases.

I shall continue using both approaches depending on what I am buying and how hard it will be to hide from her.

I do not for one minute believe that all those clothes and all those shoes are as old as she claims them to be.

Good luck!
