over proped?

Hey there, I'm new to the site but not boating, was without for a few years, got tired of looking at boatsites, finally bought. I recently (May 2010) purchased a F26. During the sea trial, we had a lot of difficulty getting her on plane, the seller thought the boat was over propped, this being done he said by the previous owner. The HIN is TROJAH004G586, it has a 305 which was rebuilt 3 years ago, due to incoorect winterizing, a 1:1 transission and the prop that was on when we hauled out in the fall is a 14 x 11. During the summer, I did get the trim tabs working, and could get her on plane, but at WOT approx 3200 rpm and 16 knots speed. Is he prop the right place to start? Any suggestions on prop size, or nything else greatly appreciated.

You need to know the displacement LOA, beam, horespower and recommended max rpm for the engine. Then contact a prop shop and they can run that info thru their software to select the right prop. But you are under propped.

And/or wait and see what the members with F26s say about their prop sizes.

What year is the boat and does it have a hard top or fly bridge? Your max WOT should be 3800 to 4200 RPM. I would try a 14 x 9 cupped for to start with. It should get you into that range.

I agree 14x9 would be a good choice , most these boats came with a 318 or a 351 so your 305 may have to work a litle harder . I belive the 305 also needs to turn more rpm (4200-4600) then the 318 and 351 so may not want to cup the 14x9 , you maybe able to repitch the 14x11 to 14x9 .

I am asuming the bottom is clean ??

F26 has 2 options in my manual.

225 Chry. Direct drive, 14x10 S. Cup
225 Merc. Direct drive, 13x10 S. Cup

Both with 1x52 - 3/4 SS shafts.

Bottom is clean, anti-fouling, but not excessive, lots of input saying prop should be 13x9, I think I am going to have mine repitched/sized to that and see what Spring launch brings. This being a new boat to me I have some bugs to work out, like the bent rudder, fixed now, while the rudder was off, I had the mech pull the shaft, as I thought I noticed some vbration, it was out about 5 thou, not sure I would notice that, but like I said. rudder was of, so thought I'd take advantage of the cost savings, rather than wait till boat was back in the water, any thoughts/comments?
