lettering removal and bilge heat

Post by dodgeem »

I've used a heat gun to remove the letters but there appears to be a glue residue left. On motorcycles I've used wd-40 to remove the glue and elbow grease. I did a quick search but only found oven cleaner and I am scared of both the oven cleaner and wd-40 on the gelcoat. Any ideas?

Also, the boat is in the marina for the winter and I've been checking it daily for ice in the bilge and general well being but is there a better way to keep ice out of the bilge? A guy in the slip beside me suggested a 100 watt bulb but I was scared of gas fumes and the potential for spark from the bulb. again...any ideas?

I used Easy Off oven cleaner to remove painted on letters on a jetski and it was fantastic. It didn't hurt the gel coat at all. I was amazed. It also did a great job of getting off the glue residue from the second jet ski I had.

I used goo-gone pro. From HD. Works good if the oven cleaner worries you.

Goo gone is great . I think it can be used on almost any surface without worry, I have used it on fiberglass, but as always test first.

To remove the sticky stuff, the glue, use 3M Citrus Cleaner. This is a very good product!

When I first joined the forum, I was concerned also about the winter and the engine freezing up, and at the time new nothing about winterizing an engine.
After posting a question and getting chewed out about putting a bulb in the bilge for fear of gas fumes I bought the Boatsafe bilge heater.

It worked great all winter. It cost an arm and a leg, but it did the job. There was one problem though I had all winter,,,,,what if the power went OFF!

This winter I found out how to winterize an engine, very easy really, but I'm also using the Boatsafe heater,,,,,,just in case!

I see others put up web sites, but will add this one too.

Thanks guys, i'll give the various cleaners a go. I'll stray from the bulb and go to a heater
