Hey guys

How do I get the Fridge out of the Cabin
Or better yet how do i get a new fridge in ? Without Major Surgery

Can't tell by looking what type of Trojan you have. It looks like it might be a tri-cabin. If so, there is a removable panel right over the salon area that will allow you to take the fridge and just about anything else out.

From the inside you have to remove the headliner and remove the clamps. From the outside you have to remove the caulking and the panel will lift right off but it is quite heavy.

With my F32 I can get the fridge out the salon doors with only a minor hernia.

If it's as 'easy' as k9th says on a Tri, you are getting off light compared to a friend of mine with a '77 (I think) Viking 43 Double Cabin.... Had to remove a side window, cut a piece out of the internal window trim, shove the old fridge out of that opening (1/4" to spare on each side after the door and all stuff on the back of the fridge was removed), bring the new fridge in the same way, new piece of wood for the trim, then try to get it stained and finished to match the rest of the 33 year old interior!!! (oh yeah, and put the window back in). Apparently when Viking made those boats all those years ago, they installed the fridge before they joined the superstructure and hull together.

He hired a guy whose forte is repair and restoration of wooden boats to deal with it, and apparently the stain and finish matching was pretty darn good!

Him and his wife live aboard. His wife has told him that if the fridge ever quits again they are going to simplify the process and just buy a new boat.

Hi Tim
You are correct she is a tri cabin
I have the boat at home this winter and in order to do that I had to remove the windshield and the rear part of the headliner. I cannot see any panel. Please tell me more I m hopein it won't be the window and sawzall

What year is your tri ? The ones with the "hatch" are the mid engine ones
as thats the way to get the engines out. ( no need to remove the windshield ) Not sure if the rear engine ones had a hatch in that area or not . It would be near the center of the salon not above the refrige

Paul is correct it in the center of the salon area and is very large - you can't miss it if it's there. Tell us what year it is and that will let us know a lot.

Should be able to see it from the outside right under your dinghy in your avatar photo... if not there then maybe you have engines under the aft cabin beds with V drives?

Hi Paul

She is a 73 with vee drives I cannot see any hatch in the salon. the only panel that may be removable is to S of the companionway . above the door to the aft cabin. But there is lots of that white NASTY sealant holding it in.

The ones with the V-drives may not have a hatch as the engines are in back . Wish I could be more helpfull to you . perhaps your old unit can be repaired ?

the old one is still going on AC or the inverter but i would like to replace with a two way.

You could make a hatch or install a sky light ( not kidding )

Sure would make for a bright breezy cabin if it opened
My tricabin definitely does not have a hatch there
Not sure if I have the guts for sawzall surgery at that level

Geoff, Are you sure the fridge is AC only? The reason I ask is I have a 74 Trojan Tri cabin and I thought my fridge (original) was only AC as well. No switch present to go from AC to DC. 2 years ago, when I was docked ready for haul out, no shore power, low and behold my fridge was running on DC power.
