1978 f32 prop shaft packing my turn
i have one shaft that i have snugged up and will not stop a slow drip while the boat is at the dock. i've had the boat only since august so i dont know when new packing may have been added or changed before. should i go ahead and replace all or just maybe add some packing? i have read the posts and internet on how to do this doesnt seem to bad, i'm leaning toward removing old and putting in new. i just wanted to ask because i want to be ready when i start. i have 1 1/4 shafts and other original stuffing box etc( i say that only because both port and starboard are the same but true that doesnt mean original)anyway assuming it is. i have 1/4" packing have purchased a removal tool and have read to cut some rings ahead of time to be ready to insert them. makes since. what i have read says between 3 and 4 would be required. does anyone that has done this know how many should be used? and any other thoughts that may make this successful. when adjusting the goal would be to have no leaks while at the dock and a slight drip while runnning. correct? also wondered if anyone has added a permeanant drip tray under so to keep the bilge dry as possible? sorry if this seems stupid. thanks for your input.
