Yes, Storage under the riser. I'm building a 1ft riser for the couch to sit on so people can sit on the couch while under way and see where we're going. I think that's the only thing I haven't liked about this boat, not being able to see while sitting on the couch. So.. I'm building a removable riser 12" tall by 72" long by 43" wide tapering to 41" wide going aft by the sliding door keeping the riser square with the engine hatches for unobstructed engine access while tapering with the wall 2", This will leave 5" in front of the sliding glass door for the drapes. In the front of the riser there is two 24"X 7" doors to access the full length storage under the riser. There is just 6" in front of the couch for a step on top of the riser. All that is left to do is carpet the riser, put latches on the storage doors, and install a hook latch on each end to attach to the floor for when we get into big water. You guys are going to be soooo... jealous when I post pictures.
I don't know about that north pole thing. My Michelle and the pups have spent the heat of the day down there chilling out and watching tv and fixing a meal or keeping guest out from under my feet

I am trying to understand the advantage to the 'riser' other than extra storage area. Seems to me that would be one more large piece to have to find room for if you have to access the port engine when your out away from the dock? Plus I am trying to see how 12" rise is going to help you 'see where your going', maybe 'where you have been'. I asked both my wife and daughter cause they both have been down below while underway and they have to be standing up to see out the forward windows while underway. Yeah they are five foot nothing but still......just my 2cts........

I must be missing something here, I am picturing my couch raised 12" and I don't see it happening. I'm going over to my boat afterwhile so I will try some tests to see befor I say anything else. I may be wrong?

I get what he's saying. If he's done his research (while underway) should work, and give him more storage. But I agree just something else to move to get to the hatches. Hopefully it will be one-piece and light weight

I did some tests and measurements before even starting this project and 12" seem to be ok. I piled a bunch of crap on the couch and measured from my butt when I could see out ok. 12" made a big difference. It all looks really good on paper. Now when I have to open the port side hatch I slide the couch to the stbd side, remove the center hatches and open the port hatch. I will just slide the riser and couch together. If I need to open both hatches, I already have to move the couch to the cockpit so now after moving the couch out I will simply stand the riser on edge and slide it out the door, and yes it is light, 3/4" ply. I usually only open the port hatch twice a year for maintainance and I check the fluids from the center hatch. The whole thing is not much different than what I have now except 12" higher with more stowage/storage. I haven't got it to the boat yet so we'll see and I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
I am trying to picture this.
My question is this: Raising the couch 12" inches higher, won't that have people dangling their feet? I know this makes it uncomfortable to sit. Will you have to build a step in front of the couch to get up and down ?
Try raising your couch at home by 12" and see how uncomfortable that would be.
I might be totally off the mark here, but that is how I am reading this at the moment.

OK. I just ate my dinner now its time to eat my words. 12" will do exactly what he said. I had my steps to the lower cabin on the sofa, and they are 9" and I could see out the forward windows so 12" will accomplish what he wants. I sure hope they don't have to be moved when away from the dock!! Just don't store to much in the 'extra' space! Nice idea hope it works out for you.

Fantastic idea. I get it from your description. I have spent many an hour running out on a cold morning of fishing sitting in my b-i-l's salon staring at the walls, wishin I could see out.
