I received the following quote for for redoing the exterior canvas only on my 10 meter.

Sorry in advance if that doesn't line up. I cut and pasted it from excel.

All I can say is I'm dumbfounded. The number I had in my head was about 1/3 that amount.

I'm curious as to what other may have paid for some of this work?

Who is the dillusional party here - Me or the canvas guy?

I'm with you on the dumbfounded issue.

Get busy getting other bids.

Be sure to specify a brand name thread for the canvas part.

Perhaps ask Roger at 1st Mate MArine for a reccomendation.

My flybrige Enclosure was 4k canvas work is not cheap for sure

How does the combing around the gunnel come off or go back on for that matter?

The canvas work looks to be about right, but the upholstery pricing is crazy.

I think the proper interpretation is : "We'll do the canvas (cause that's what we like to do), but we wanna make sure you don't hire us for the upholstery cause we really don't wanna deal with that..."

Another option : whoever typed up the quote messed up and added a zero for most of the upholstery jobs. I can see seats for $378 (not $3,780) and L Lounge cushions for $220 (not $2,200) unless there is tons of ribbing / piping / fancy curves / etc... Then again, this is an International and things are more fancy and curvy than typical F series seats... so what do I know...

The Internationals had approx 2" strips of alternating color fabric.

If you are trying to duplicate that "look" by having it all sewn that way, your costs will be astronomical.

Don't. It's a pretty dangerous occupation (at least in my area). People in my marina want to beat the snot out of pretty much every canvas guy around, because we can't find anyone reliable....

Lots of horror stories (months or years to get new canvas, sub-standard quality, arrogance and attitude up the wazoo, etc..), but they aren't short.. so I won't repeat them here. If you find a really good canvas guy, hold on to him (and let people know). And if you find one in Ontario, let ME know!!!

I replaced all of the foam and the interior upolstery last year. Even doing it myself cost over a thousand dollars in materials. I was very suprised how much everything costs.

This was all white with not stripes. I actually told the guy they could take out some of the piping etc to make it less work.

I'm glad I didn't aks them for a price to do the inside. I can't begin to guess what that would cost

I am not familiar enough with the curves of the upholstery on an International to say for sure... but there may be a bunch of this stuff you can do yourself for the price of the vinyl. Paul recently posted info on his instrumentation cluster (plywood, glassed a bit, some batting and vinyl overlay).... that's really all there is to it for simple jobs (and you don't need to glass!).

For your coaming, pull the panels, ditch the existing crap, add foam or other batting as desired, stretch vinyl over top (making sure there are no wrinkles), and staple (use stainless staples!!!) ... then re-mount.

For simple bench seats (without plywood backing) - an existing or new piece of foam, vinyl panels for top/bottom/sides sewed into the right size and shape, a zipper, and enough strength to cram the foam into the thing before zipping up, and you are done.

Backed seats and piping are a bit more complicated, but ignoring the piping aspects, you are talking foam being glued to other foam or plywood to add cushioning, vinyl laid over top, and stretched and stapled (then staples hidden one way or another, usually inside the seat trim).

My mother did this kind of stuff (not necessarily in vinyl) to re-upholster my dad's old Sea Skiff (helm and companion seats, v-berth, couch in the cabin and its back (converted to bunks), dinette, as well as vinyl roofing over the cockpit); my wife has done this (again, not necessarily in vinyl, for v-berth cushions in the F32, and dozens of house related projects for us and her Interior Decorating clients).

Realistically .... if you can lay carpet and do wallpaper... you can probably do much of the upholstery job yourself, as long as you have access to a sewing machine that has enough power to sew the vinyl.

Just replaced my canvas last year and it was 5K with the best glass available. Luckily my insurance paid it all.

Try a car shop they're usually 1/2 of a boat guy. Canvas price looked in line.

a good marine shop will use good canvas /glass , so make sure of what your getting use 40 mil "glass" some people save a lot by using 20 mil then find out the can't see out of it 2 years latter

My canvas work was about $8K 4 years ago. that included the rear camper back enclosure, Fly Bridge cover and Fly Bridge bimini..........had thread failure this winter and found a local canvas shop the resewed the isenglass on 3 large zip out windows.....she charge me $10 bucks I thought that was a great deal.....they will get my future canvas business..........John
