Gas/Ethanol Filtering

Post by rossjo »

Anyone running a multi-filter system to clean up their ethanol tainted gasoline?

On my 454 (and maybe my 200 Yamaha), I'm thinking about implementing a 10-micron spin-on, then a 2 pr 3 Micron Racor with a vacuum gauge just downstream (between filters and motor) from the filter. When the gauge displays ~ 5 inches of Mercury @ WOT, time to replace the 2 or 3 micron filter.

Ross, I believe Merc specs state that pulling down more than 2 inches at idle increases your chances of vapor lock. Introducing more restrictions into the fuel system will increase vacuum. I would keep that in mind when designing your system.

Roger that - good input - the spec I had said 5in-Hg @ WOT. Hence the need for the in-line pressure gauge.

Anyone else doing multi-stage filtering of their fuel? I have about 130 gallons in 2 boats here that is full of Ethanol. Hate to use it for weed killer.

Filtering doesn't help with faze. Has it gone bad ? The best thing to done with corn gas is to burn it, and don't store it.

Ross if the corn gas went bad its not even fit for the lawn mower unless you're lookin for a reason to get a new one. The stuff sucks ! And oil burners don't get me started on that this new low sulfur stuff is eating the injectors in older ones. [/i]

Taking out the O-rings anywhere the deisel fuel has to flow. Not enough sulphur for lubrication or power. I put enough injectors in my N14 and 60series. Thank goodness I don't have to worry about that any more. Oh forgot the scatterpillars too!

I been keeping on top of the low - sulfur fuel , and there has not been any major issues in the marine area . The only issues you see on boat diesel is people worrying about it .

Ross, at the risk of getting you totally p-o'd, don't you have access to non-e gas at the marinas down there? Obviously you gotta get the stuff out of the bottom of the tank(s) but that can be done with a hose and pump. I know it's not gonna get any easier, what with the feds talking about E-15 and E-20 these days. Next time I drive through Nebraska I'll give one-a-them cornhuskers an earful!!

Randy - you really can't P me off - I agree! I just filled my skiff with E-Free (and posted all of the local E-Free gas station on the local fishing site for others). To tell the truth, I've slipped by with no problems until this year.

Now I have 2 boats with phase separated fuel. My good friend runs one of the boat repair shops in town, and his biz is mostly E-gas fixes, so I plan to build a simple pump-out (the E/Water) and filtering (30//10/2 micron) portable Polishing system [commercial units are $4k-15k] for my friends and I to use to clean up old crap fuel we have in our tanks. Will require a T or disconnect to their fuel system, and then pump out the old E/Water, then filter the rest (3 times back to their own tank) and add some Octane Booster (love to have some lead, but same that for my Sunbeam Tiger) and go fishing.

When you run 50 miles offshore - you can't F with whether your fuel is worth a crap or not! Your crew's life depends on it!

Send corn to Japan - they need the food - theirs is radioactive. Give us 100% MTBE gasoline in return! Win-Win!

I'll send my old Alcohol/Water mix to Washington to make a cocktail!

For future reference, PHPBB (software used to run this bulletin board) was written by programmers, not boaters) who can't figure out how to accept 2 sets of "()" in a sentence! This if OFTEN (not always - see how this is working?) the problem with "forbidden messages".

Low sulfur takes 20k miles off a set of injectors king Paul , and I've got the international 444 T's to back that up
