not so stupid question

Post by Heefus »

So the boat is in the slip, de-winterized and ready to go.

The old weather report says we will have a couple of freezing/below freezing nights this week. The current water temp. is 54 deg. Should I have to heat the engine compartment, with 100W bulbs, or should the water provide enough insulation to keep her warm?

I have always had trailer queens until this point, so I am a n00b when it comes to this whole slip business. :?

Kinda what I figured. I have yet to fill the freshwater system, and the heat/AC is still winterized too.

You'll be safe. And no light 100 watt bulbs in the engine compartments they make boats go boom.

forecast 31-32 deg. Just a couple of nights, and not in a row.

We are above the salt line, but my creek is generally considered to be brackish.

Yea, I have used 100W safety bulbs in the past, and they did the trick.

Alexander, they are the bulbs made for utility lights (think mechanic's light). They don't break easily, and are encased in a metal cage.

Just look at it from a safety thing and insurance guys won't like them.

After I posted , Did have second thoughs lights are far fom 100% safe as far as spark and fire ( but better then space heater in a gas engine room ). a lot of folks use them , but not on my boat. you may think about a boat safe heater next year

Insurance does NOT cover those type of bulbs, so you might as wlel just cancel the insurance and save some more $.

i'm totally dewinterized except for the water not being turned on at the marina. that is scheduled for the morning of 01 april. all the vent covers are off, and all i need to do is finish water proofing the canvas and i'm set. i did a water, seacock, bilge temp test yesterday, (was rather cold and windy at parkside), but my bilge read a steady 51 degrees, water was as 55. i've been running the reverse cycle for the past two weeks and the cabin gets nice and warm so that tells me that the water temp is warm enough for the system to extract some warmth from the water. still, the prospect of even a 'light dusting' of snow right now is not welcome news. i think we all need to start sacrificing chickens and goats to keep the angry gods of winter away! :)
