Stripermann2 I replaced mine on a 77 f32. It took only 2 or 3 rings but you will know when you can no longer fit the packing nut on to the threads of the stuffing box. the way i did mine was to cut a short pice of PVC and cut out 1/4 of the side.then snap it over the shaft then place the packing ring on shaft slide the nut down and the PVC will push the packing evenly into the packing nut this way you dont have to turn the nut and will know where the seam in the packing is i had to tap on the nut to get it to bottom out. I I hope this helps you it works for me

Probably kinda late for you, but I use 3/16" packing on my F32. 3 rings is preferable. Stagger where the gaps in the rings are (ie one at 12:00 position, one at 4:00 position, one at 8:00 position).
I found the simplest way to cut the right lengths of packing for the rings is to simply 'coil' the packing around the shaft 3x, and cut in a straight line with an xacto knife. Each ring will be exactly the right size.

The packing should be cut at a 45 degree angle, not straight. this way the ends overlap and seal when the nut is tightened. staggering the joints is correct, and putting in as many rings as will fit is correct. using the pvc pipe to seat the rings is a great idea, but lacking that, they can be seated with the nut as well.

packing rings
How much water will flow in while you are changing the packing rings on the shaft? I have mine pretty much tightened as much as it will go and it still leaks more than it should. I am thinking about doing it while in the water but did not want to panic when I pulled the nut back. Is all the packing in the nut or between the threaded portion and the shaft?

TADTOOMUCH, The water will be commin on in lol. Its loud and can be a little scary the first few times. as long as no one has used that dripless packing putty crap, it will be in the nut. have 4 or 5 pieces of packing cut and ready, and a packing hook to pull out the old packing. normally youll use 3 pieces (joints staggered) the reason for 5 is in case you drop 1 or screw up the ends of one. you can actually use a roll of electrical tape and tape around the log and shaft to slow things down. clean out the nut, repack, then remove the tape and tighten the nut on down.
