10 Meter Windlass

Post by tsawyer »

I would like to replace the windlass on my 10 meter to one that I can operate from the helm.

I think the existing windlass is a Sea Wolf.

For anyone that has done this, what did you replace yours with?

I was looking at a Lewmar Profish 1000. It seems to be a bit smaller in size to the one I have and don't want to totally redesign the way it mounts.

Thx.

Can you set yours up to control it at the helm ?

The profish 1000 looks like a nice windlass I have thought a about one to replace mine so I can add chain . My good is rope only .

If it's the unit I'm thinking of, you should be able to control it from your helm, just have to wire it up if not already there. How is it activated now, foot switches at the bow?

I put a Lewmar 1000 on ours about 3 years ago and it has been wonderful. I have 20 feet of chain and 250 feet of line.

You should be able to add a remote relay and it'll work from the helm.

It is controlled by a single foot pad. There is a switch on the windlass that you have to manually change to go from up to down then step on the pad.

I don't know if there is a way around having to manually change that.

I used the same remote that was installed for the original unit.

Don't know how savvy you are with electrical, but it's deffinately doable. If there is no separate relay/solenoid pack, you'd need to piggy-back the operation of the two switches you use now.
