monitor
ok this might be a little off the hook but I have never been a big fan of not being able to see below and that is compounded more by riding on the flying bridge,,
I could get all the bells and whistle for my garmin and set a camara up below and view it from my head set but the expence of this is well over 1k
so I am thinking baby monitor that comes with 2 camaras or a truck/car back up monitor,,
Has any body thought about or done this

I'm doing this very same thing to my boat in a few weeks.
Three cameras. Two in the engine room, one port, one starboard and one in the salon...keep tabs on my engines while under way and my guests and my dog.
Can't go wrong with the price either! 7" color monitor too. Everything under $300.00

Or buy an old laptop (Craigslist or ebay) and get a cheap Webcam ($50 @ Staples) and use it.
The laptop can run SeaClear, connect to WiFi, etc. and store a ton of Nav Charts on it.

9Rock,
Not wireless. I'll run the cables up through my chase to the bridge.
I was on a trip a few years back when a remote oil filter hose blew and it spewed...needless to say, if I could have caught it in time, may have saved me a big headache.

to all that are looking into this
i like the idea and have also wondered about this
are you going to count on the infared leds mounted on the cameras to light the engine room? or are you installing lighting. have you placed a camera there temporarily to see what the image looks like?
all responses wold be appreciated

I have not as I have not purchased yet. However, from the site, they say you can switch the view, from the display so the mirrored image will be reversed. (actual view)g36 wrote:to all that are looking into this

I may or may not have to illuminate the engine room a bit...but if so, it would only require a small amount (12 volt) and that, I would wire and control engine room illumination from the bridge as well.

The infrared system in most of these new ones need all most no light , we use them on our trucks. I've got a new truck with a two camera system and it works great.

Tony is absolutely correct. I installed one of these infrared systems on two separate HD wreckers that I used to operate and they work great. Put a 2LED light in the engine room and when you look at the engines on the monitor you will think the hatches are open illuminating the engines.alexander38 wrote:The infrared system in most of these new ones need all most no light , we use them on our trucks. no doubt about the led lighting being bright enough. even the infrared could work but there would have to be another external infrared source. i also use them in my work. i just wondered what the plan was. also at least on my f32 i believe without a very wide angle lens it would be hard to acturately postion one camera on each engine to be able to view all the way around each. the cheap cameras i have looked at arent really set up with a real wide angle lens which i think you will need with only a 2 camera setup . it would be great to be able to view all sides of both of the engines. that was where is i was going when i asked if anyone as set up a camera temporarily to see the view was. is the plan to view the entire area or certain items? again i am still with you on the good idea just asking some questions.

As far as engine room viewing is concerned, main goal would not be precise view. But you'll see water slinging, spraying...from a pump or shaft seal, steam and God forbid...fire. It's another set of eyes, if you will...hopefully clarity will be fine. Another alert monitor.

I still think for the money it offers a lot of comfort and thats allways a good thing ,Stripermann2 wrote:As far as engine room viewing is concerned, main goal would not be precise view.
