318 starter help
i need a starter
78 f32 chrysler 318.std velvet drive transmission.
the starter is mounted above the bell housing aft of the flywheel.
someone has marked this on the starter as ccw is this correct for the normal port engine on the trojan f32 chrysler lm318?
also do you have a reccomendation on company for purchasing a rebuild or new at a good price

I think the question would be is the starter ccw or is it the engine they are refering to? Is there a rebuilder of starters and alternators in your area? I would watch anything from Precision co. Around baltimore they don't have a very good reputation, products don't last long at all and a lot of premature failures with no warning.

sorry to hear you didn't get the help -- probably just timing. The ARCO people in Florida are a good source, and offer good call-in assistance. Check their website. Local sources are always good to develop for future use (I had a good rebuilder in Glen Burnie, MD, before moving -- the kind of business you should do in person.)
Good luck.

G36, have you found anything out yet? My recollection is the starter faces forward behind the flywheel. The port engine I'm assuming (for most applications, LH prop on port) is the standard rotation engine (CCW), or LH looking at flywheel. That means the starter would have to spin CW. Also assuming no V-drive here so balancer facing the bow.

out on a limb here, but I would be inclined to go with the CCW indication on the old starter. If that rotation doesn't make sense for a boat with counter rotating engines, maybe you are dealing with a replacement engine that rotates in the wrong direction for a normal twin engine installation. I'm out of my depth here, but I think I would be inclined to stick with whatever I have (re. engine rotation) if everything else is acceptable. Just get the right replacement starter.

I agree with oldboat1, you can't assume anything. To be sure, once you remove the starter, look at the teeth on the ring gear. The wear pattern that you'll see on one side of the teeth will tell you the direction it gets turned by the starter.

thanks to those that replied. this cw ccw wise thing does seem simple but is something as you know is important to get correct when repairs are nesccesassary.

OK, I'm confused. How can two gears meshed together rotate in the same direction!! If a drive gear turns LH (CCW), the driven gear must turn RH (CW). Yet the diagram indicates opposite. Am I missing something hear?
I'm looking at the starter rotation from the starter motor forward to it's gear. Maybe I should be facing the gear of the starter with it's motor behind the gear to determine rotation??

hey big d. yep i was a bit confused but when i found the the diagram it helped make it better. sometimes you have to go with the pics rather than try and understand it.
i have a bad starter drive in my starter. it has been difficult to find help with this. most everyone just wants you to exchange it for a rebuilt unit. $220. or some wayyy more. i finally got one guy to give the part number for the starter drive assy. and i have finally found a place that has a starter drive on the shelf and will sell it to me for a very reasonable price. i ordered it. so i have decided i will repair it myself. all the internals of my starter including my brushes are ok. the drive is simply not engaging.

You're way better off that way. Now you have a spare. I've learned from past experience to never part with the original hardware if it can be rebuilt. Too many exchanges have ended up costing me time when the originals would simply have been no brainers.
