I can confirm that it is possible w/o doing any damage to the gelcoat. I did a small test in the fall on the piece that covers the rudder post and that seemed to work.
A couple of days ago I did about 1/2 of the stern using a Citris stripper. It takes two passes, the first one to remove the clearcoat and the second to remove the paint. I'm working around the swim platform and thru hulls which makes it slow. The sides will be quicker, more area but not many obstacles. I deliberately "made the turn" and did around the exhaust so I have to finish now! I bought $50 worth of scotch brite pads which is the manual part of the process. On the sides, I'm going to try hitting the clear layer with my palm sander/220 to speed things up.
You can see a slight outline in the gelcoat similar to removing lettering, but I think it'll buff out fine and fade away over the course of a season.
Anyway, a couple of people have asked for details. I have a bunch of upgrades and now planning on making a short youtube video to give others ideas and also be a "mid cabins buyers guide" at the same time. I'll include this part as well.
