Detroit 671TIB

Post by fourreins »

Looking at a 14 meter with the 671TIB. I get a lot of mixed reviews on this engine. You guys think this is too small of an engine for this boat? Also, do they tend to have a shorter life span when you pump the regular 671 up to the tib? Any thoughts on these deisels would be appreciated.

I would not say its to small for the boat . The more power you get of a engine the shorter the life . this goes for gas or diesel . How much of the power used is a big factor on the hours you will get . Many HD diesels are rated for there life in fuel burnt not hours .

The 671TIB at 485 HP is at the limit . and you cant figure 1500-2000 hour between overhauls ( pistons and liners ) on the average in a sport fisher . But I know of some at 3-4000 plus that are run relatively easy .
Rember the average boater uses it 100 hour a year so that can be 15- 20 years

A good engine survey can tell you a lot . A good engine survey on a DD 671 involves removing the air box covers and inspecting the cylinders and looking for broken rings . a good engine survey will cost you $$$$$$$

Now that you thinking about a diesel , Join boat Diesel ( boatdiesel.com ) I believe most every Diesel owner here is a member and will agree that joining is a must .
