let the repower begin

Post by gettaway »

I pulled the engines from my F32 last monday, have spent every moment of free time trying to clean up 30 years of crud in the bildges. I scrubbed the entire engine room with orange cleaner and then soft scrub yesterday. I should get her painted before the weekend.

What am I repowering with you ask? well, I bought a matched pair of mercruiser 165, GM 250 inline 6 cylinders and a pair of twin disc 502's.

The mercruisers have just over 400 hours on them, long story but they were bought new by a guy in Airzona, who, after 7 years of ownership passed away. The wife held onto the boat unitl thie year and gave the boat away to the gentleman I bought them from.

The engines run perfectly and the twin discs came with the correct flex paltes and bell housing adaptors. 140psi (+- 2-3) in all cylinders

The "New" mercruiser 165's, Note, that is dust from sitting, there is not an oil leak, spot or spill to be found.

I re-powered a couple of years back and only wished that I repainted the bilge at that time. I saw a picture of one that was painted. Not sure if you would be better off using an epoxy base paint, but I am sure there are people here that are more knowledgeable

Wow...one thing I notice is how far forward your engines sit than mine do!

Good luck and keep us posted on the refit.

Striperman,

really, our engines are in different locations? what type of transmissions do you have.

After a lot of measuring, it looks as if the inline 6's with the twin discs will actually sit a little further aft and I'll have a littel more room between the front of the engine and the bulkhead.

The bell housings off your V8 s will fit the In line 6 .the front engine mount , will some how have to be supported by the strings , but that should not be hard.

Well...from the looks, your shafts appear to be longer. I know...there's a joke there. :-)
My engines have more room between front and bulkhead. Same Chevy small block footprint with BW velvet drive. You have what appears as no room up front! I'll check measurements this weekend...
Paul is correct on the bell housing as well.
