Gentlemen,
I'm a proud new owner of a 1985 Trojan 10m Express. It's going to be a project boat as it's been sitting for a long time. That's ok with me because I love the style and layout of the boat and I can see the potential! I'll be posting some pictures of the boat and project but in the meantime I have a question.
The boat has twin Crusader 350/454's which I know are going to be challenging on fuel costs. I've searched and read many threads on things I can do to help fuel economy and I plan on getting a floscan to dial everything in.
My question here is regarding the stock carburators and what the best solution is for performance and fuel economy. Is there a consensus that to get the best results you should:
a) rebuild the existing carb and leave it basically stock
b) install some other/newer more efficient carb like Edlebrock's marine unit or some other aftermarket unit?
c) option a and/or b above with the addition of a torquer manifold to replace the stock manifold
d) something else not listed
Thanks for any advise, I'm looking forward to meeting you guys and sharing my project as I go forward!
Mark

Welcome to the forum and I am sure you will have many happy hours aboard your new (to you) Trojan. Fixing it up is more than half the fun. That's what we are doing to our tri-cabin and she is well along her way to getting there.
Carburation problems can be a real headache and I am fighting some of my own right now. I am not a mechanic like several on here, but Paul's advice sounds spot on.

Thanks guys for the info, much appreciated.
I'm surprised these motors can't take advantage of the carburator improvements made over the years.....
I'd love to go diesel and have done a lot of reading on that subject too. But for now there is no budget for that. It seems like the Cummins 6BTA is a common solution but I'm told they won't fit in the engine bay of the express model. The only way I could swing it is doing some type of home-brew marinizing of an auto engine. I could handle all the fabrication stuff as I've done that type of stuff all my life, and I have a machine shop to make special components required. But obviously that's a very big project.

Improvements ?, carbs are old tech and there really has not been much improvements of the the last 25 years , Most improvements are Hype in my opinion .
