Rust in freshwater sytem

Post by todd brinkerhoff »

I have an International with the freshwater tank that is integrated into the hull under the salon. My water heater is inoperable so I bypassed it at the beginning of the season. In the last few weeks, the water is initially coming out of the faucets with rust, and the problem is getting worse, where now the water stinks like rust. There isn't a chance that the water tank is metal is there? I have plans to change out all the waterlines next season, but this issue is bugging me and I have no idea where rust would come from except the hot water tank, which is being bypassed.

Any thoughts?

Wow Paul - you're on a roll today with the humorous remarks. That was a good one.

Don't know about your boat but my '79 tri-cabin has galvanized steel water tanks - two of them in fact.

is the water heater completely bypassed out of the system? i sometimes get hot water out of the cold water side of a faucet because of the mixer valves, so, if you capped the inlet to the tank but not the outlet, your mixers could potentially reverse pressure and you coud get a accumulator/resevior effect from the heater tank and thus pull rust from heater tank.

not trying to be funny on this as I thought the meter boats had glass tanks . when filling water tanks I always run the water for a while, As I have seen some nasty stuff . the well water out of my well has a rusty look to it ( only use it for the garden use city water for the house ) .

Could the hot water tank syphon back into the freshwater tank as there is no factory valve between the freshwater tank and the hotwater tank?

Just a thought.

Had to talk to John Leeds about info on my boat anyway, so I asked about the tank. He confirmed it was glass. The hotwater tank was completely bypassed and disconnected at both ends. I didn't think about the accumulator tank, but isn't that just air in the tank?

I will run this tank dry and check the water at the outlet.

the accumulator has a rubber diagphram in it but if it goes bad I imagine there could be some potential for rust?

Is your boat a Lancaster PA build or wasn't your boat built in Pulaski WI after the buyout ?

Lancaster, PA...1 of about 20 built before the buyout. John Leed has been very helpful and has provided me the limited info on the boat. This was to be the next "Trojan International" before they sold. New hull and exhaust system, with a V-drive system.
