Nine new before shots of the engine, I got all the electrical stuff off yesterday and on some of the exhaust. Carb is off, starter is off and shot.
okay if the starter is installed and i am looking at it from the back end, where the battery cable goes and i use my finger to rotate the teeth/gear on the head of the starter and from that position they turn counter-clockwise...is my engine RH or LH??

That appears to be the port engine which has to turn the prop looking from the stern (read flywheel end) Counter clockwise, from the "front end of the moter it turns Clockwise which is normal rotation same is in vehicles.
You should have a starter there that turns as the engine the above direction. Just take it to a rebuild shop and have them rebuild it, that is what I did and it was simple. I took things off engines and put them back on the same to avoid getting them mixed up, marked some with sharpie, some things stamped P or S for the obvious, as I took them off.
If it is a 318 there is a spacer under the distributor, normal rotation does not have one. But you engine being a standard port installation should be a normal rotation that will turn the screw over the top to the outside.
