New Canvas Snaps

Post by gruhs »

Getting my "off-season" helm cover water-proofed and ready for use soon and found I had to replace one of the button snaps. With the help of our friendly local Ace hardware store it seemed liked an quick easy task until I found the snap kit I purchased contained slightly smaller snaps than the ones that were in my old canvas. My question is are there more than one size button snaps for canvas or has the industry gone entirely to new smaller size?

I may be way out there in left field with this.........
I may be right, or I may be wrong....
But I think that this is what happens when we start to import all our goods from other countries, looking at costs and profitability.

Check the "Made In" label

is it Imperial..or metric?

here in Canada, most of us have 2 sets of tools as well, usually both metric and imperial measurements.

I imagine the clasps, depending on where they are coming from may fall into this same catch 22.

Just saying.........

you might try an upolstery supply and see if they have the correct size snap. I have noticed the walmart home depot etc snaps and grommets are quite inferior to the actual marine canvas upolstery grade hardware. Ive used the lesser quality in a pinch, but the good ones perform much better, they are usually chromed brass with a stainless spring.
