Side vents

I am replacing the plastic vents with stainless ones. As we have many of species of stinging insects that love to invade places such as a boat, has anyone placed screen wire, hardware cloth etc behind the louvers to prevent entry?

I do not want to impede the flow of air significantly. If you have what size mesh was used?
