Bottom paint

I bought an 87 Trojan Express 10 Meter International and was perusing the owner's manual. I observed that the manual states "...copper based paints are not compatible with TBTO vinyl paint used on International models."

This would then exclude the Micron Extra (less copper, but still in there) and other Interlux Biolux type paint I've used and had tremendous success with on other boats in the past.

I see there is a new Interlux Pacifica this year, that is copper free.

Have you guys avoided the copper paints or used them anyway or were you even aware of this reccomendation?

100 to 1 . its got copper on it now . if TBTO has TBT in it , then that has been outlawed years ago . if it was my boat I would be using a cooper paint . check with the past owner I bet he used cooper .

I have a 1987 10 meter express mid cabin and have been using west marine Bottom Shield for the past 5 seasons with no issues it uses Cuprous Oxide . I checked my manual and couldn't find anything about not using copper paint. What section/page did you read it on? As Prowlerfish said, Someone used copper paint on it at one time or another.

I figured it wouldn't matter, i don't know what "...TBTO vinyl paint..." is that they refer to as being used on the International Models. I've seen TBT mentioned as something that used to be in bottom paint. But the TBTO paint they refer to is the kind that had been put on the boat in the factory.

I figure as long as what ever is on there now sticks to the boat, it is alright. incompatible probably refers to the possiblity of the paint not sticking. doubt any damage would occur.

At this point in time I'm really surprised that the EPA hasn't outlawed painting the bottom of boats entirely...

Its probably a tossup between ablative paints and transporting klingy slimey things all over the place.
