Hi folks,
I'm doing my first winterizing (we're in Vancouver so it doesn't really get that cold) and want to close my thru-hulls. I believe there are 4 sea strainers - 1 for each main engine, 1 for generator, 1 for Heater/AC unit. Also, there is the pump-out thru-hull.
I tried to close off the sea-strainers but the valve wouldn't turn. Any suggestions on how to close them? Penetrating oil? Or do they have a grease nipple? I'm not really even sure what direction they turn so I was reticent to try very hard on my first attempt.
Any insight here would help a lot.
Thanks,
Teejae

At first flash of Eden, we raced down to the sea...
There are many styles of thru hulls. A better description of the style or better yet a pic of them would be more help. If the engines has the T bar on the opposite side of the lever, you have to loosen up the T bar in order to shut off the thru hull. If not a good penetrating oil on them will not hurt to loosen them up. Remember the more detail to us, the faster you get the correct answer. Hopefully!

Yes, you have the "T" style seacocks on the strainers assuming they're original. Look on the other side of the handle, that's the "T" which needs to be loosened before tightenting the other side.
Righty tighty, lefty loosey. Corny, but it works so remember the direction to turn things.
If you do the AC seacock first, you'll get a better view of how it works. The engine room seacocks are essentially the same just a smaller size.
