diesel electric repower ??????

I have a lot of Friends that sail . One put it best, they are sail assisted power boats . That is if you plan on going anywhere .

anyone ever try 1 big diesel that would drive a hydraulic pump supplying power to hyd. motors on the prop shaft? same hyd pump could power the genorator and a host of other things???

That has been done in cases where the engine cannot be placed in a location to turn the propshafts . Not sure about runing a genset that way .

Thats dependant on what size vessel we are talking about here. 25 foot? 125 foot???

IMO it absolutely could be done, however everytime you move power from one type to another you lose transmitted power. IE friction etc. To do it one would have to do what they do in the newest cruise ships with electric motors driving their lower units.

A chrysler 318 is 225 HP, I am not smart enought to figure how much generating horspower and wighit it would take to transmit to prop.

Current setup is engine, transmission, shaft and prop.

projected would be engine, generator, driving motor (heavy), shaft and prop. IMO it seems to really complicate system and add a lot of dead weight. I am not an engineer other then (shade tree) but that is my opinion.

And could you imagine all the piping and H.P. hoses that it would take to run this set up and the maintenance after a few years.
