Recent thefts at marinas

Hey gang, seems to be a issue here in Pasadena Md of shore power cords being stolen from boats. Wondering if anyone else has seen a rise in this happening in there area. I am sure they are being sold for scrap copper which is no where near the replacement cost. Got to love this economy that causes this to happen. Will look at making something to secure my cord with a lock at both ends.

First I have heard of it Dennis. If you come up with something to secure them let me know cause your right they are $$$$$$. What marina are you at?

That's happened numerious times at our marina over the years, almost always transients that needed one. They caught a guy doing it in '09 and someone cut all his sparkplug wires in half. The dude had to wait until Monday then take a taxi roundtrip 40+ miles to get new sets.

I would also assume if it was a rash of missiong cords that its the copper they are after. What is anyone going to do with a dozen 30 or 50 amp cords other than sell them used or for scrap metal. Unfortunately the folks buying up scrap aren't often honest either. I think it should occur to someone that 10 cords coming in the door for sale are probably stolen. Receiving stolen goods is also a crime, but I doubt anyone cares enough to do much about it.

Saw a guy riding a bike downtown the other evening - had so much wire around him he could barely ride. Don't think its transients as much as copper values.

it's a darn shame that some feel that it's easier to steel someone things today in this country than it is to go out and get a darn job....( in these hard times) unemployment rate in SE. Va. 6.4%
and the marina I'm still at has hired night watchmen due to stuff being taken off of boats in layup..

My electronics came home with me the day I finished winterization. We haven't had a problem at my marina with thefts to date but it could start. The owner is always out and about at our marina and questions anyone that he believes shouldn't be there. He also lives on the premises. Maybe that helps cut down on the theft?

Allen I am in a private community pier on the Magothy river. This is happening at commercial marinas also in the area. (2) months ago a marina was hit and they removed over 50 cords. The police are aware of the problem but I also think the scrap yards turn a blind eye. Being in the electrical trade I will try to make something that is securing my cords.

A friend of mine has his on Cornfield Creek and so far he hasn't had any problems that I know of.

WOW - that was a pretty big bridge - probably 125'Long x 20' wide x 20' tall.

But they caught the guys, who got $5k for it after they cut it up.
