Water/fuel separator

Post by nitro115 »

Hi all, hope you're having a great Thanksgiving!
I have an '83 Tri Cabin with 2x454 Crusaders and my water/fuel separators are in bad shape. They seep through some gas. Very little, but it concerns me, no matter how little the leaks are. I've tried to remove the bowl, but I can't, not even with a filter wrench. I would like to order new ones, but I cannot remember the size of the input/output thread sizes. I think they're 3/8", but I'm not sure. Is there anyone that could confirm whether I'm right, or wrong? It could be 1/2", but I really would like to know. The original separators FRAM branded with orange cast aluminum top. If anyone could help me out, I would really appreciate it.
Also, the one I'm looking at has a 90 gal/hr flow rate. Is that enough? I would think so, but I'd rather ask, before buying them. I live 2hrs from my boat, so just hopping over there isn't really an option.

Thanks,
Feri

90 gal/hr flow rate if fine , what filters are you looking at ? I do belive yours would be 3/8 line .

The mercruser type fuel filter set up is a good one , sierra make a good one w/ spin on filter

Thank you! I had doubts about the 1/2" size, now I'm feeling a lot better :-)
I'm looking at this separator, it seems like a good one:

If you think the other one (Sierra) is better, please let me know. I have no experience with these parts at all. I like the see-thru bowl and primer of the Racor, but those aren't something I can't live without.

That filter is for a outboard . You cannot use any Fuel Filter with a see thru bowl on a Inboard gas boat per CG regs . Racor makes some good filters , but you need to get the correct one . The nice thing about the Sierra filter is you can get a replacement at almost any marina or boating store ( mercruser filter will fit too I believe)

I installed Racor filter assembly's ( Part # 320R-RAC-02 ) spin on replacment element ( # S2228UL ) metal bowl, 60 gph, 1/4 NPTF ports ( You will need to buy fittings ). I purchased them from http://www.marinefilters.com $ 63.42 this was a couple of years ago. When you install them if you put valves on both sides of housing it makes it easy to change out filter, no mess.

Thank you guys, so much! I'm glad I didn't just jump on it and ordered. I do have valves on both sides of the separator, so that is not an issue then. When I left the boat last time I closed both valves, just in case.
Thanks again for the help!
