contemplating a move up, diesel experts where are you?UPDATE
Hello everyone.Hope everyone's doing well.I haven't been following the board much these days as life keeps getting in the way,but still have the Trojan and going through winter boat withdrawl.
Anyway,I'm contemplating a move up to a 42 1977 Grand Banks. It's locally owned and seems to be in pretty good shape and priced right.... from what I'v seen on several walk arounds....(don't start.... no survey....yet).The engines are "ammarine 404" deisels which I understand are really marinized John Deere 6404D's...with about 4100 hours on them.
These engines seem to have a good rep from what I've read from BIASED sources but I was wondering if any of Gods favored people knew anything about them.... (yes I know get a survey....).
appreciate any thoughts

That many hours on anything worries me but I'm diesel ignorant....

I'm not familiar with them - but the hours do sound hihg. But they were probably not run real hard on a big trawler - but you never know. Does the boat look like its been loved or used/abused?
You should join BoatDiesel.com - $25/year well spent.
Lots of info on this engine there:

They called them AMMARINE 404's. The base engine is a 6 cylinder 404 natural rated at 120 HP.

personally, i've always loved the GB, and the 42 is a true classic. just remember, there is a LOT of exterior teak in addition to the interior teak that will require upkeep. one thing that you have to look for with this particular vintage GB is the window frames. some were made out of teak, some were made out of mahogany and oak. they are prone to peeling paint and rot and separation from the cabin. look on the interior around the frames for possible water intrusion, in and around the 'corners'. prowlerfish has given me a great deal of education on diesels, and 1800 hrs is not a lot of hrs for them. depends on how well they were cared for. if the price is right, and she 'speaks' to you, i'd go for it.

1800 hour s thats nothing . John Deere makes a very good diesel . Thats the good news , the bad news maybe . can you get parts for them ? I manly would worry about the marine side . this was a joint venture between American Marine and Deere . not sure if American Marine is even around
Get s/n and see what J.D. can get for parts .
As Ross said Join Boat Diesel best 25 bucks you can spend if your even thinking about a marine diesel .

I think as an orphaned brand, as RWS would say, sharing and gathering info from and among each and every one of us, is paramount.
I agree...if boating is our thing, spend a note on a worthwhile cause.

The listing is incorrect. The hours on the engines are 4100 +;I do plan to review the maintainance records and oil analysis.Boats looks well cared for but that is a lot of hours....on the other hand if they have a usefull life of 10,000 hrs then not to worry.... Paul...any idea on usefull life w/o a rebuild?
Thanks

I'd pay, but then I'd be paying to discuss things with Yahoos. Which I can already do for free.prowlersfish wrote:Speaking of joining a site How come some of you that are on the site often have not be come a Forum Supporter ??

Peter , that will very in how it is maintained and how it was ran . they could have lots of hours left 10k ? could be , or ran hard and not the best care they could be near the end . It will take a good Engine survey to give you a better answer . This is different then a boat survey . And boat surveyors are not the best engine people .

peter, after you have an engine survey done, pending the outcome, you can always ask for a survey offset from the listing price. if the current owner is looking to sell w/ out loosing too much, you might just come out ahead in the game. i'm curious as to why the listing broker would screw up on the engine hours like that though. or, is it 1835hrs since overhaul?Peter wrote:The listing is incorrect. The hours on the engines are 4100 +;I do plan to review the maintainance records and oil analysis.Boats looks well cared for but that is a lot of hours....on the other hand if they have a usefull life of 10,000 hrs then not to worry....
