Post by jefflaw35 »

prop appears to me turning right to push water, if you look at if from under the boat. that would mean turning left out of tranny, correct?

Yes you have a right hand rotation engine which is the same thing as a reverse rotation engine

Gets a little confusing; unlike standard engine rotation (LH), standard prop rotation is RH. So for a single engine application of that vintage vessel, it was common to have a counter rotating engine (RH) to accomodate the standard RH prop rotation. In a twin engine boat, RH prop is usually the starboard side. Having said that, at least for Chrysler anyway, there were models (L19 and R19) using Warner 1.91:1 which spun the prop opposite to the engine output direction, therefor changing the position of the counter rotater. So it would be possible to have a standard rotation engine (LH) spinning the prop RH. Fast forward several years, and manufacturers moved to using standard rotation engines and using the transmission to change engine direction for RH rotation. This way, no special engine hardware was needed.

Good question? Not trying to be a smart a$$, but I've learned over the years not to assume anything, because who knows what the previous owner did right? So even though you have a RH prop and the Trojan label indicates RH, as long as you don't have a Warner 1.91:1 reduction gear, and output direction is not changed, then I would say you have a counter rotater, RH engine. You can confirm more by reading my post in your other thread "Two things". That's RH from a marine perspective which is different from the automotive world perspective. We in marine view direction from the back of the engine, the automotive world views rotation from the front of the engine...big difference. If you talk to someone about a long block, they must be talking in marine direction terms, not automotive.

Well Big D is correct, you need to check the tranny too unless you are going to replace that as well.

A little change of subject.....looking at your motor pics I'm wondering if this boat was sunk? .......as in, has that motor been submerged? And therefore the boat? Before you get too far, have you checked stingers and decks for rot? Not to be a downer, but is it going to be worth the effort and $$ when there are some great deals out there?..............John

of course and i wasnt being rude, i was just teasing because ive heard so many different things that my mind is boggled. slow learner i guess. the reason im after a confirmed answer is because i dont assume anything. if i dont know and cant find out hands on then i will drill people or pay people to find out for me. i dont mind having 2 rebuilt motors. but i dont want to buy something that i will never use. the less the better. all this info is just telling me to pull my motor, break it down, free it up and find out. looking at lunch during day light in the boat and taking pictures is doing me no good. I was trying to help someone else at the same time hlep myself, but its just to much to consider like you said.

John, this has been the topic for weeks now. this boat has not been under salt water, its not my only boat! it has been under rain water, cabin ruined, motor tranny ruinend, poor maintiance ruined. TROJAN worth saving! stringers? here is how i tested, most may disagree so bring it on!. i used a 1/8 inch drill bit and starded drilling, 4 inches apart in the cabin. 100% solid wood, have not done anywhere else and if you are looking for terms of where on the boat im working, well i havent learned them yet so.... for 400$ this boat is very sound and strong, if i was an idiot i would sell the 8000$ hardtop/cobia tower setup it came with to buy a new boat, but being me i think ill take the project on, dont really have the money or credit to buy a nice boat right now, but i sure do have the will and want to build one! thanks for your concern tho. it is nice to see that people care, there really is alot of good people here!! but John please look at my post. this boat floats and it will float for ever, soon with all the nice things any new boat has. im a weird fella, i like tv's and bathtubs, and exotic pets and dumb things rich people like, i just buy them as the money comes along. call me a hobbiest i guess. my father was dogging me last night saying "you and your grandad" with your hobbies... LOL my dad has 75,000$ worth of shop smith equipment in his garage... like he should talk. my grandad. well he had airplanes, private small ones... i dont like to fly go figure, my dad and pop are both pilots, not me lol anyway, i think even if this boat had a 10 foot hole in the bottom of it, i dont care, shes my baby now. and I need her and my wife supports me. she wants to fish! and travel!! thanks for your concern tho!. help would be better!

Wasn't calling you out Jeff, was actually appologizing for the long winded posts but I find it difficult to condense this complicated topic into just one or two short sentances. Don't mean to confuse you, and if you are, don't feel bad, heck the rotation issue is enough to confuse most of us. It was worse many years ago. That's one of the reasons the industry standardized terms and operations.
