ok, got a question..how do you tell if it's got nothing hooked up to it..say you find one in a marina's engine shop hanging on a engine stand that's appears to be a lock block re-man...? and yes it's for sale...

Manually rotate crank and bring number 1 piston up to TDC compression stroke, then rotate crank 90deg, if the next piston that comes to compression stroke at TDC is number 8, it's a standard rotation engine, if it's number 2 instead, it's a counter rotater. But I think you already knew that young manalexander38 wrote:ok, got a question..how do you tell if it's got nothing hooked up to it..say you find one in a marina's engine shop hanging on a engine stand that's appears to be a lock block re-man...? and yes it's for sale...

You didn't tell him which way, to rotate it....Big D wrote:Manually rotate crank and bring number 1 piston up to TDC compression stroke, then rotate crank 90deg, if the next piston that comes to compression stroke at TDC is number 8, it's a standard rotation engine, if it's number 2 instead, it's a counter rotater. another way, assuming you have your original engine. Pull the distributor and spacer (Rev enginee) look down at the gear on the end of camshaft, the teeth in the new engine should be angled the same way as you old Rev engine. Camshaft and engine turns reverse but distributor is designed to turn same direction on both engines facilitated by cutting the camshaft and distributor meshing gears opposite direction.
And correct about next compression stroke on rev engine being #2 turned in the reverse direction.

Larry , the maybe true on a Chrysler small block , but its not true on most GM or Ford rev turn engines . the Cams spin the same way by using gears instead of chain . so the gears are the same .
And to find out want cly comes up next you still have to know what way it turns .

We were talking about 318 Chrysler and yes it is true on this engine, both for comression and looking at the cut of the gears.
I guess I should have been more specific as to what brand of engine, I assummed we were refering to Chryslers as that is what Jeff has.
