Maryland boat registration increases

Post by koviak »

Don't know if anyone has seen this yet. Maryland DNR is proposing a huge increase in registration fees for boaters.

16ft. and less $50.00
16 to 32ft. $125.00
32 to 45ft. $250.00
45 to 65ft. $500.00
over 65ft $700.00

This is compared to the $24.00 we now pay every 2 years !
You think they would have learned a lesson after putting a 10% tax on yachts a few years ago and putting a lot of companies out of business.
What fees are paid in other states compared to Maryland ?
This on top of the proposed gas tax will sink my boating in this state!

Luckily I just renewed mine. Hoping in the next 2 years the increase will go away

Just talked to Allen a few hours ago and he had just got the New not a happy camper for sure . I under stand you still have to pay if you document the boat.

This is nothing but a tax .

Our state ( VA )just added sale tax to marine diesel fuel (5% ) this is on top of the taxes already on the fuel .

Registration fees in Canada are free, and unlike the USA, are regulated by the Federal Government, not the Provincial (State) as you have down south.
Waterways are all federally owned and regulated.

But..I am expecting that to change just as soon as they realize there is a tax grab they forgot. Only a matter of time.

I've seen it and it is just a proposal for now...If we Marylanders don't stand up and scream foul...it may have a chance. I wonder if Boat US has any guns in this fight??? I also heard that there is a proposal on the table about making the Chesapeake a "no discharge zone".
Maryland has become a state for the wealthy.

Our govenor OWE'MALLEY has been using the residents of this state as his personal ATM! I am ready to take my boat and register it in another state! Just got to figure out how to do it legal like! Or just move out of this state all together! The cost of living here has gotten totally out of control for sure!

This may bore those of you that aren't from Md....sorry 'bout that but it could happen in your state too. Our government has miss-appropriated our revenue way too long. Now they want to come after the only segment of the population they "feel" can absorb it. We do however have a voice...Boat US is one of our greatest advocates...they lobby for us day in and day out. We also have a vote and each one does count. We need another boater in the state house. WTF?? OWE-Malley doesn't live in the real world. I would think he has advisors to tell him that the loss of the sales tax alone that most boaters pay would be detrimental to the budget.

just get a PO Box in another state and have your papers sent to it. Virginia people do it all the time, including myself with my cars, my boats are cheap enough not to worry about, it still works for me, but im sure that will end soon to

Be glad,on top of similiar fees you could have Texas Crappy Crapper Tax, $13 for two years to have permit to have a toilet on the boat. Plus 26 - 40' $110 for 2 yrs.

Seriously, government at all levels are looking for funds so just stand by for the future.

I don't know if it is that easy. I have friends in DE that have their boats in Md. for parts of the year. There is a definite time limit, though I don't know what it is. If it registered in one state, I think it has to spend time there and can only visit other states for limited amounts of time. Anyone having better knowledge of this...please chime in.

I believe in most cases the boat needs to be rejesterd where its principle use is or where it is most the time . this can vary state to state so it gets all messed up . I have heard Fla will try tax you within a few months . No snow birds around to ask .
